There are several things a business manager needs to do to be successful. Here are some simple things you can do to prepare for your role as a business manager:

  • Make sure you have an education. People respect a business manager that has an education. Many business managers are receiving MBA's even if they don't get a huge raise from it, they are getting the respect of their employees. If you have not been able to go to college, make sure your employees know about your years of experience in the industry. There is a lot to be said for learned knowledge and all the experience you have gained through working hard for the company for several years.

  • Learn to laugh and have a sense of humor. Your employees need to work for a person that is able to relax and can talk to them kindly instead of being "Mr or Mrs Boss" all the time. Having a sense of humor allows employees to feel like they can come to you with any problems. Being approachable is one of your greatest strengths as a business manager.

  • Time management. Successful business managers know the importance of time management. You need to be conscious of your time so you don't double-book yourself and run late to important meetings. Your employees need to be able to get a hold of you whenever they need and by managing your time wisely, you are showing them that they are truly important to you and you would like to help them grow and develop in their career.

  • Keep up with the times. Technology is constantly changing and it is your responsibility to keep up with it. Your employees need to see you as a capable individual that is able to handle computer upgrades and other chaotic things that happen with the advancements in technology.

  • Have a vision. If you want to become a successful business manager, you need to have a vision that people want to follow. Your employees need to know that you want to take the company forward and you need to inspire them to help you do so. Without a successful vision, it will be difficult to get the support of your staff and you won't last long as a manager.

  • Seek out skilled employees that can help you do your job better. Hiring the right people will make you a better manager as you will all understand the different roles and responsibilities you each have and how you can learn to work together to bring about the same common goal.

  • Listen. One of the best skills a successful manager possesses is the ability to listen. It's not enough to just have an open door policy for your employees; they need to know that you are actually listening to what they have to say. Give them eye contact and feedback when they ask for it. Make time to talk to your employees and try to learn a little bit about their personal lives as this will help to build a stronger connection between the two of you.

  • Provide Feedback. If you want to gain the support of your employees, you need to be able to provide them with feedback. Your employees need to see that you notice their hard work and you want to help them continue to advance their skills.
