Boosting morale with workplace wellness programs
Several companies have introduced wellness programs to help people understand their physical health and the importance of taking care of their bodies. Healthy employees are more productive, take fewer sick leave days, and rarely use their health insurance. One of the biggest aspects companies are focusing on is mental health awareness. A lot of people have struggles with mental health problems because they are trapped indoors for 8 or more hours a day. These people often do not get the sunlight they need or the exercise they need to rejuvenate their bodies. A good wellness plan helps people get outside and get the fresh air and sunlight they need. It also encourages them to get some type of exercise during the workday. In order for a wellness plan to work properly, there must be managers or team leaders that are educated on health and wellness. They must be able to help their employees learn how to take proper care of their bodies to increase their health. If the mangers can properly implement the wellness program, the productivity of the employees will increase. The entire company will feel an overall sense of happiness and productivity. The office will be organized better and this causes people to work better. When everyone at the company is in good health, the morale of the company is lifted. People are able to feel good about themselves and they are able to focus on their job duties easier. They also get a sense of accomplishment when they perform their job functions well. One aspect companies need to work on is managing the stress level in the offer. Far too often employees get overwhelmed with their workload and many of them get burned out because of the stress related to their job. Stress causes a handful of physical problems too like high blood pressure, decreased energy, and headaches. To help your employees manage their stress level, incorporate a wellness program that teaches them deep breathing techniques and yoga. Offering yoga during the middle of the day or during employee's lunch breaks is a wonderful way to manage stress in the office. Wellness programs can work if they are managed correctly and properly implemented. Some companies have found tremendous savings by implementing a wellness program. Johnson and Johnson invested $4.5 million in a wellness program and found a savings of $13 million in medical expenses. This doesn't include the money they are also saving on production costs and sick leave. Another great example of a wellness program is NASA. They found that their employees that get regular exercise at 50 percent more productive from their employees that do not exercise. Wellness programs also help to retain your employees. When people feel good and are satisfied with their jobs, they don't look for a new job. The company shows people they are willing to invest in their health and this does wonders for the mental state of many employees. Companies that invest in their employee's health often attract new employees that can bring new talent to the company.
