Cheap Ideas for Workplace Wellness

businessmeeting30393267.jpgFor small business owners, workplace wellness may not be at the top of your priority list among paying the bills and making your business profitable, but valuing your employees can still be a part of your business. Your budget to implement a workplace wellness program may be small to non-existent, so here are just a few inexpensive ideas for small business owners like you to focus on that will help bring about workplace wellness.

  • Create a wellness committee - The purpose of a wellness committee in any business is to plan and implement wellness strategies and to tailor your business's wellness program to the needs of your employees. The wellness committee should be made up of employees that are actively engaged in developing new workplace wellness practices as well as their regular work. Members of the workplace wellness committee should include employees who can be champions or coaches for wellness that exhibit a healthy lifestyle themselves. The cost of creating a wellness committee is free.
  • Conduct a Needs and Interest Survey - The purpose of a needs and interest survey is to find out from your employees where they are weakest in their overall health (physical, emotional, etc.) and what their knowledge and interests in health related topics are so you have a jumping off point for your wellness program. You want to build a wellness program around the needs of your employees otherwise it will fail. The cost of conducting a needs and interest survey is free.
  • Publish an Online or Email Healthy Tips Newsletter - The purpose of a healthy tips newsletter is to help your employees be more aware of their personal health. It can include the healthy recipe of the month, spotlights of what other employees are doing to improve their health, articles from health professionals, motivational thoughts centered on health, or any number of things that bring your employees' awareness to their health and lifestyle habits. Publishing it online or as an email saves on printing and paper costs. The cost of an online or email healthy tips newsletter is free.
  • Stock Vending Machines with Healthy Snacks - If you already have vending machines on the premises, then you are already paying someone to bring in snacks for your employees. Instead of candy bars, sodas, and potato chips, have your vending machines stocked with healthy snacks like granola bars, fresh fruit, and fruit juices. It doesn't cost you any more to switch out what your employees are buying, but it does give them a healthier option.
  • Coordinate a Monthly Healthy Lunch Club - Like your wellness committee, a healthy lunch club focuses on your employees' needs. The purpose is to promote healthier dietary choices. Nutrition and healthy diet are one of the major focuses of a workplace wellness program and a healthy lunch club is one way to promote awareness of what your employees are actually eating and their nutrition.
  • Schedule a Healthy Food Contest or Other Contests - One way to get employees on board with a workplace wellness program is to make it a competition. Schedule a healthy food contest, have employees submit the recipes and/or nutrition content of their entry to your wellness committee and award the most nutritious but best tasting entry. You can also have Health Milestone contests, Weight Loss contests, or any other type of contest that promotes a healthier lifestyle. The cost for contests is the costs of what you reward as prizes to the winners, so it could be as expensive as a gym membership or as inexpensive as an MVE (most valuable employee) water bottle.
