In addition, twice a day dieters also take a product made up of volcanic ash, which is supposed to remove the toxins from the entire digestive tract. Supposedly, the intestinal cleanser swells the stomach and makes the dieter feel full. Colon Cleansing Diet Safety Some colon cleansing diets call for the frequent use of enemas. These can damage anal tissue and should only be used if a doctor orders it. In most cases, enemas are used to treat severe constipation or to cleanse the colon before surgery or certain colon tests. If constipation is severe, it is recommended that anyone considering colon cleansing diets consult with their doctor or medical provider first for safer, more reliable constipation treatment. Many people will find it easier and cheaper to eat a diet higher in fiber and drink more fluids in order to prevent constipation in the first place.
