Fit employees

Employers have quickly found that overweight employees are causing their health insurance costs to rise. Overweight employees are at an increased risk for various health problems like high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, and heart failure. Not to mention all the chronic aches and pains that comes along with obesity. Employers have found that they have to not only pay more in health insurance but that they are losing money in production costs.

The majority of employees will simply state that they do not have enough time in their day to actually exercise. To combat this excuse, several employers have begun offering exercise time for their employees. The employees have some extra time where they can go get in a quick workout or simply walk around the building for a few minutes. Even walking 30 minutes a day will add an additional 5 hours onto your lifespan.

The U.S. Surgeon General has found that most jobs involve a sedentary lifestyle. This means too many workers are sitting behind a desk and they are not getting the exercise they need. Fit employees benefit their employers in more ways than one. When the employees are fit, they can perform their job duties easier and many of them have a positive impact on their co-workers, causing them to work harder. In addition to increased productivity, employers also get lower health insurance premiums; this can easily save your company thousands of dollars a year.

One of the greatest features of fit employees is their ability to handle stress. These employees feel better about their work performance and they have the energy to go throughout their workday. When a person is fit, they are less likely to get sick or have an injury, causing them to miss work. Since they are in good health, they can cope with situations that may cause others to become easily frustrated. A lot of fit employees are able to advance with their company simply because they have increased concentration skills and many of them start to show signs of excellent leadership skills.

If you have a lot of employees that are not physically active or are not in good health, implement a wellness program. Wellness programs do not always have to be designed to target the weight loss aspect, they can also encourage smokers to give up the habit, or they can encourage employees to do something to benefit their health.

When a person is physically fit, they start to see an increase in self-esteem, self-image, and many are satisfied with their overall health. This can really help someone that suffers from depression or bipolar disorder. As employees make the transformation to fit employees, they are able to have increased stamina and improved cardiovascular health. Not only will your overweight employees notice an increase in energy, they will also begin to have a decreased risk of developing diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and strokes.

If you cannot offer your employees extra time to exercise while at work, encourage them to exercise after work or before work. If you can offer gym memberships to your staff members, do so. Try dedicating one room in the building to be an exercise room. The employees will have the opportunity to exercise during their lunch hour or after work hours. You can even give them opportunities to exercise while they are working. Treadmill desks and exercise balls have become popular with several companies and many employees are losing weight as they write their emails and conduct conference calls.

Encourage your employees to get up and walk around every 45 minutes or so. This will help to keep their blood circulation flowing normally and it can reduce the risk of blood clots in the legs.
