How having paid sick leave could mean a healthier staff
As an employer the one thing that you tend to think about when it comes to offering paid sick leave or offering more paid sick leave is that employees are going to take advantage of the sick leave program. What this means is that you are afraid that people are just not going to show up for work because they don't feel like working and get paid for it because they are going to take a sick day. While this can be true in some cases, majority of the employees will only use their sick days when they are sick. In fact, it has been shown that only about 10% of the employees who have paid sick leave through their employers try to abuse the paid sick leave program, most of the time though these employees are dealt with through the absentee policy that is already set in place.
One of the main reasons that having paid sick leave can mean a healthier staff is because if employees are going to be allowed to get paid for the work that they are missing when calling in sick they are going to be more willing to stay home when they are sick. The main reason that employees come into work when they are sick is because they cannot afford to take any time off from work without being paid for it. Due to this fact they come into work when they are really sick and rather than getting work accomplished, they just succeed in spreading their germs around. To break this cycle you need to offer your employees the incentive of paid sick leave so that they will be encouraged to stay home when they are sick. Offering paid sick leave to your employees can also help employees become healthier because it lowers their stress levels. Even if your employees don't get sick most of them probably have children at home that get sick and require at home care, meaning the parent has to take time off work to tend to their sick children. If you offered some kind of paid sick leave for your employees their stress level would decrease because they wouldn't have to stress out about having to take a day off of work without pay to tend to their sick children. The lower your employees stress levels are the healthier the employees are going to be. The last reason that you should offer paid sick leave to your staff is because the employees who are seriously ill will have a better chance at getting into the doctor to receive treatment. This will allow you to be warned in advance notice about any potentially serious outbreaks, such as the flu, before problems arise. How this happens is that employees can use their sick leave to go see the doctor and by receiving preventive care or even treatment when you are sick you will have healthier employees working for you.
