How to choose a treadmill

Treadmills are one of the most popular exercise machines available. You can change the speed to fit your ability. On some of them you can even change the angle of the treadmill to make your workout easier or harder. Treadmills are a great way to get that aerobic exercise in. Here are some general things to look for when choosing a treadmill.

1. Decide where this new treadmill is going to go. Then you'll know what size of treadmill to buy. You don't want the hassle of picking out a treadmill only to decide that it's too big and you have to go back and get another one.

2. Dress the part. You're going to be trying out treadmills, so put on some tennis shoes and workout clothes, and actually try them.

3. Look at the motor. Larger and heavier motors will last longer and they'll be cooler when running. Try to find a treadmill with a motor that has at least 1.5 continuous duty horsepower. If you weigh more than 185 pounds or if you want to run on your treadmill rather than just walk, get a higher continuous duty horsepower.

4. Check the thickness. Look at how thick the walking area is. The thicker it is, the more comfortable it will be to use your treadmill. If you just want to walk, make sure that the walking deck is at least _" thick. If you're going to job, go for 1".

5. Make sure that the track is long enough and wide enough. Try it out and make sure that you can walk without having to step off. If you want to run, go for a longer track. Falling off a treadmill is pretty painful.

6. Look at the electronic board. Make sure that it offers everything you want. But remember, if dealing with a budget, that you don't need much.

7. Check the warranty and service agreement.

If you want a full-range, top-of-the-line, hi-tech treadmill, I recommend looking at the Bowflex Series 7 Treadmill http://www.amazon.com/Bowflex-7-Series-Treadmill/dp/B000BGMFHO/sr=8-4/qid=1164155196/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/102-9816420-0804958?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods.

If you want a fully electronic treadmill, but don't need one quite as advanced as the Bowflex, consider the Weslo Cadence C44 Treadmill http://www.amazon.com/Weslo-Cadence-C44-Treadmill/dp/B000DENDU2/sr=8-3/qid=1164155196/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/102-9816420-0804958?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods.

Finally, if a manual treadmill is your thing, you can get a good and inexpensive one in the Fitness Quest edge 500 Manual Treadmill http://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Quest-Edge-Manual-Treadmill/dp/B0001KRXE0/sr=8-8/qid=1164155196/ref=pd_bbs_sr_8/102-9816420-0804958?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods.

We've all heard it. It's all over the news. We read about it in the newspapers. We see reports about it on TV. We hear about it on the radio. Magazines are full of it. The doctors constantly talk about it. It's impossible to get away from it. That's right: people are getting fatter. America is supposedly suffering from an obesity epidemic. Europeans, once able to look down upon their chubby and grubby American cousins, are no longer quite as sleek and slim. Even while we talk about the wonder-working Mediterranean diet, Europeans are getting fatter too. Airlines are charging obese customers for two seats. Cars are having to be redesigned for the new bigger consumer. Obesity is one of the leading killers for the middle-aged population. Along with all of this talk about the growing rate of obesity, there comes a chorus of what to do about it. There are always the fad diets: block fat! kick start your metabolism and burn four times as many calories! Eat only cabbage soup! Eat only steak! Eat only celery! Only drink water! The more sensible, and the healthy-minded experts, are still as loud: follow the food pyramid! stop eating when you're full! eat more vegetables! don't eat that chicken skin! balance your meals! and, to go with it all: exercise! exercise exercise exercise!

So, whether you're just starting out exercising, or you're a habitual exerciser who wants a change of pace, consider using a treadmill.
