Improving employee snacking habits, why it benefits you

breakfast32012441.jpgWhen you work eight hours a day or more, you're bound to want a snack or two. But the way you and your employees snack may have an effect on your business costs and productivity.

How is this possible? Unhealthy snacking on things such as sugary sweets, donuts, soda, and others can result in lower energy throughout the day as well as the potential for weight gain. When combined with a sedentary job, unhealthy snacking is a recipe for obesity. In the very least, it makes it more difficult for those who are trying to lose weight to do so.

So how does improving employee snacking habits benefit you? Consider the following ways:

Better productivity

Unhealthy snacking can often result in poor employee health, which leads to a loss of productivity at work. It means employees in poor health are taking more sick days, resulting in projects taking longer to meet and deadlines being missed. In addition, people who have unhealthy snacks at work all day may feel slugging and find it difficult to focus on the task at hand. If their job entails operating machinery, this could be very dangerous.

Improved snacking in the office means employees who are healthier, have more energy, and are more alert.

Lower insurance costs

Insurance costs are influenced by a number of factors. One of these factors is the number of doctor visits employees make in a year; unhealthy snacking can lead to tooth decay, which means higher dental insurance premiums because of more visits to the dentist. It can also lead to obesity, which introduces a host of other health problems. But when employees have healthy snacking habits, they have fewer dental problems and a lower risk of obesity, which means your insurance costs are lowered.

Better quality work

Employees who are sluggish from too much snacking or unhealthy from snacking on high fat, high calorie foods may also produce a lower quality work. This can be a result of missing long periods of work, not having the energy to complete tasks, or overlooking things. This is a waste of time, as the work that is not up to par will most likely have to be redone. Healthy snacking will keep employees more alert, resulting in better quality work.

Now that you have seen the benefits of improving employee snack habits, it's time to implement them. The following are some ways you can improve employee snack habits:

  • Get rid of the candy bowl. Many offices and companies have a candy bowl that employees can snack on throughout the day. Replace candy with healthier treats, like low sugar granola bars, veggies, or do away with it completely.
  • Discourage too many sweets. In many offices, employees like to bring in the baked goods they make from home. While this is a nice gesture, it can result in too much unhealthy snacking. Encourage your employees who like to bake to make healthy snacks, or save them for special occasions.
  • Stock the vending machines with healthy food. A vending machine full of candy bars and sugary sodas does not lead to healthy snacking. Fill your vending machines with granola bars, dried fruit, almonds or healthy nuts, water, yogurt, or other healthy items.
