Keeping a healthier office

As an employer you are probably already aware of the fact that your employees are going to get sick, it is a problem that all employers have to face when running a business. However, what you might not be thinking about is that when one employee gets sick and comes into work they are actually exposing everybody in the office to their germs. The next thing that you know the entire staff is out sick within the course of one or two weeks.

Having sick employees can actually cause you to lose money, especially if you have to shut down your business for a few days because of how many employees are out sick. As a business owner you want to avoid this kind of problem so that you do not lose money. The best way to avoid having to shut down your business for a few days due to sick employees is to keep a healthier office.

The first thing that you are going to need to do is to make sure that your phones, computers, keyboards, and other equipment are actually sanitized on a regular basis. The best bet you have is to make sure that they are cleaned thoroughly at least once a week. You can have your employees do this or you can talk to the janitorial company that you use about cleaning this type of equipment. But this is extremely important because these items are shared and many times germs land on them and just spread from one person to the next because of how many people are using that equipment.

However, when you are cleaning any kind of equipment or surface in your office you need to make sure that you are using the proper cleaning chemicals. This also includes making sure that the cleaning chemicals are diluted properly with water so that they work to their fullest potential. You will also need to make sure that you are using them in accordance with their directions on the label for maximum effectiveness.

In order to keep your office healthier you will also need to ensure that disposable tissues and alcohol based hand sanitizers are available throughout the workplace. The tissues are great for people who have runny noses or who are sneezing. Having them placed throughout the office ensures that there is a tissue handy that they can grab the tissue and cover their mouth and nose while sneezing, which will help prevent the spread of germs. Having the alcohol based hand sanitizer around the house will also prevent the spread of germs because you can apply it to your hands after sneezing, soughing, or touching certain objects. The hand sanitizer helps because employees will be more apt to use this than getting up from their desks to wash their hands each time they sneeze or cough.

Encouraging your employees to get flu shots each year will also help to keep your office healthier. The reason for this is that if your employees get flu shots they are not as likely to get the flu and if they do get the flu it is going to be a milder case of the flu. The smaller amount of employees who get the flue means less flu germs being spread around the office. You can also encourage your employees to stay home when they are sick. If you happen to notice an employee who is visible sick you can ask them to go home for the rest of the day. The best way to get employees to stay home when they are sick is to offer them sick pay. If they can get paid for missing a day of work to help them get better they will be more likely to stay at home, which means fewer germs being spread around the office.
