Office "Biggest Loser" challenges, why they work and how to set one up

trainer19312456.jpgYou've probably heard of the hit television show, The Biggest Loser. In this show, teams work to lose weight and get in shape. At the end of the show, the team that has the person who lost the most weight, or the "biggest loser," is the winning team.

Many offices across the country have implemented their own Biggest Loser competitions, with great success. So why does the biggest loser challenge work so well? A number of reasons, including:

  • Support. In the Biggest Loser, you are divided into teams. This team becomes a valuable support group to help you stick to your goals and resist temptation. With your entire team counting on you, it's easier to stick to your goals.
  • Accountability. With the teams in the Biggest Loser, you also are accountable. Knowing you have people depending on you to stick to your fitness and weight loss routine is motivation to stay on task.
  • Money. Typically, there is money at stake for the winners, and everyone puts in some money to participate. With money on the line, people will work harder to win it back.
  • Public knowledge. The Biggest Loser has public weigh-ins. For many people, this is the motivation needed to stay motivated for weight loss. Knowing that everyone else-your team and the other team-will see whether or not you are sticking to the plan or cheating, will keep you working towards your goal.

Setting up a Biggest Loser challenge isn't hard at all. The following tips will help you to get a Biggest Loser challenge started in your own office:

Make your teams.

Separate all of the participants into teams of equal sizes. Teams are an integral part of the competition because they give you each team member someone to be accountable to. Not only that, but knowing that the other team is watching you and your snacking habits around the office is also motivating as well.

Set a buy-in amount.

Another part of the Biggest Loser challenge's success is the fact that something is at stake. Set a reasonable amount of money everyone must contribute to add to the prize pot; typically anywhere between $10 and $50. Knowing they have paid to participate is also motivating; it keeps team members from dropping out of the competition.

Have a schedule.

You will need a starting date and an ending date. Decide the amount of time you are going to have to complete the challenge, usually between 8 and 12 weeks, and then mark it on a big calendar for all the participants to see.

Make your weigh ins public.
Another part of the success of the Biggest Loser is public weigh-ins. Have a neutral person in the office who is not participating in your challenge be a witness to each team's weigh in to keep things fair and honest. You don't have to post actual weights in numbers, but do post whether the contestant went up or down in weight each week and by hoe many pounds. This should be public and is an important part of the motivation!

The Biggest Loser challenge is one that will get your employees on the way to health and fitness. It is also surprisingly easy to set up.
