Preparing Your Staff For Cold And Flu Season

Cold and flu season can take a huge toll on business productivity. Employees that get sick can quickly infect the rest of the office and for several weeks or even months you could be dealing with low productivity. It is important that you focus on getting your employees healthy and keeping them healthy so you don't have a virus spreading through the entire office. Here are some tips to help your company prepare for cold and flu season to keep your staff healthy.

Tip # 1 - Vaccinations
One of the best things you can do is encourage your staff to get vaccinations. Flu shots are usually paid for by the insurance company and you might even be able to get it set up to have your employees have a free vaccination clinic. This is one of the best things you can do in order to prevent the cold and flu season from infiltrating your company and causing you to have a long winter ahead of you.

Tip # 2 - Office Cleanliness
Keeping the office clean is a great way to reduce the amount of bacteria and diseases that are in the office. Have some anti-bacterial wipes in the office for your staff to use. Make sure areas that are germ prone places are cleaned often. These areas include door handles, phones, keyboards, and desks. The places that are touched the most need to be cleaned as much as possible if you would like to improve the health of your employees. Some companies will even place some anti-bacterial gel on their employee's desks so they can use it to clean up their hands if a sick employee does come into their office. Make sure your sick employees are washing their hands often and that they are also wearing masks to try and limit the spread of germs.

Tip # 3 - Sick Leave
Offer sick leave to your employees. You want them to stay home when they are sick and to get better. When they are sick in the office it only brings the germs to the office and reduces your productivity. Offer sick leave to your staff so they can focus on getting better. Encourage them to use sick leave. Some employees try to save it but you can tell them that they need to go home if you can tell that they are quite ill. Employees that are sick at not at their 100% potential and they often work slower and can really bring down the morale of the rest of the office. If there is a very serious infection in the office (like swine flu) you actually need to place infected employees on what is known as compulsory leave. They need to have medical treatment and have clearance from a doctor before they are allowed to come back to the office.

Tip # 4 - Fresh Air
One of the best things to do with cold and flu season is to make sure you have proper ventilation in the office. You need to try and keep as much fresh air in the office as possible. This helps to take away the air that may be filled with bacteria and can bring you in some fresh air for the staff to breathe. Some companies bring in fresh plants to the office to help clean the air where others will even bring in some air purifiers. Having fresh air is one of the most important things that you can do in order to reduce the amount of germs in the office.

Tip # 5 - Hand Washing
Encourage your employees to wash their hands often. Washing your hands helps to cut down on the germs in the office and really can prevent others from getting sick in the office.
