Should you keep a nurse on staff?
In fact it is from having that school nurse on staff that makes many business owners or managers think about having a nurse on staff at their place of employment. The reason for this is that if you actually had a nurse on staff, somebody who knew about various medical conditions you would not be faced with trying to decide if your employees were playing sick or if they were really sick. Basically you could let the nurse decide for you, they would be the ones to decide if somebody was too sick to be at work or if they were just making up some kind of an excuse to go home for the day. This would be nice because it would mean that less people would be trying to take advantage of a sick policy or even paid sick days. But also having a nurse on staff might encourage other companies to adopt some kind of sick policy that allowed people to have paid sick leave. But the truth of the matter is that no matter how nice the idea of having a nurse on staff is it is not a real practical idea. One of the reasons why it is not a great idea is that having a nurse on staff is just going to cost you even more money, basically for the most part you are going to be paying them to sit around and do nothing. The reason for this is that most people who call in sick to work are not going to come into work first and then go home. They are actually going to call in before work even starts which means that the nurse isn't going to be able to tell if they are actually sick. In this case the nurse would only be useful if an employee came into work sick and they were there to tell that employee to go home. But another reason that a nurse would be a waste of time is if you actually had a sick policy in effect. Basically this policy would describe what your employees had to do if they were going to miss work for a period of time. Most employers require some sort of doctor's note that tells the employers that the employee was too sick to come into work. But having a nurse on staff could actually be a problem because of all of the new privacy laws that have gone into effect when it comes to the medical profession. Basically a doctor or a nurse can't give out your personal medical information, not even in a note, to anybody but you. This makes it hard for a nurse to inform their employer of what might be wrong with a certain employee. Basically all they can say is that they were seen by the nurse or doctor and they are going to miss work. But what this amounts to is that if you have a good sick policy in place and you show some trust in your employees there is no reason why you should have to have a nurse on staff or any reason why you should even consider it.
