Teaching your employees ways to save on health care

Employees are definitely getting hit hard today when it comes to how much they are expected to pay for health insurance benefits. As a business employer you want to provide your employees with affordable health benefits, but it is getting much harder to do so as costs continue to increase. Teaching your employees ways to save on health care is one way that you decrease their health care expenses and keep them as valuable employees. Here are some things that every company should teach their employees when it comes to saving money on health care.
- Taking care of yourself. Many companies have decided to adopt wellness programs to help their employees stay healthy and fit. By doing so they have eliminated some of the unnecessary doctor or hospital visits as well as unnecessary prescriptions due to high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Teaching your employees the importance of good health can help them save on health care costs and cut medical expenses.
- Sign up for Flexible spending or cafeteria plans. Some employees don't know a whole lot about what flex spending or cafeteria plans and need to be educated about both so they can see the benefits of saving and planning ahead. How a flex spending plan works is the employee will take so much money out of their check each month before taxes are taken out and that money can be used for medical expenses. Cafeteria plans differ in that you have to calculate the entire year and how much money total you want to take out for medical expenses. Each month, money is taken out of your check and placed into a cafeteria account where money can be withdrawn and used to pay for medical expenses.
- Use generic prescriptions. Health care costs can be cut down drastically by taking the generic prescriptions as the pharmacy rather than the name brand. I'm not just talking about the ones that you can buy over the counter but also the ones that doctors will prescribe. Just about every name brand prescription has a generic name and can save you sometimes more than half of what you would have paid for the name brand.
- Shop around. There are several different options when it comes to health insurance benefits and the ones that the company offers may not always be the cheapest or the best for you and your family. Don't be afraid to look around at some of your options for different health care plans. Health savings plans or HSA plans are another option when it comes to alternative comprehensive health insurance. It is a type of savings vehicle that allows people a different way to pay for health care and can enable you to pay for current health expenses as well as save for future medical and health expenses.
- Negotiating with health insurance companies. Most employees don't have any idea that they can negotiate some of their expenses. Educating your employees about the power of negotiation can be empowering to them and save them money. For example, some health insurance providers offer incentives when you can pay cash for your visit or exam. Even if they just take a little, you'll end up paying less than what you though. So negotiating is always worth a try.
Teaching your employees ways to save on health care will let them know that you care about how much they're paying and want to make sure they're getting the best for their money. This will produce happier and more loyal employees.
