There are many reasons that employers should keep their employees healthy. Healthy members of a staff take less days off from work, they usually work harder and are more productive at work compared to unhealthy employees, and employees' morale tends to be higher. Happy, healthy employees make happy, successful employers. But how can an employer help their employees be healthy?

One of the best ways employers can keep their employees healthy is by participating in a wellness program. There are many different companies that offer their wellness services to other companies. Most of these wellness program companies will cost money initially, but will result in the employer saving money in the end through insurance costs.

Personal Consultation

Wellness programs take time to evaluate each employee. This helps them to understand what is will be needed to help the individual employee. Depending on the exact wellness program, each employee could have their blood drawn to check the triglycerides, HDL and LDL levels, and blood glucose. Employee may also go through a series of strength tests, and aerobic test and their body fat could be measured. All of this testing will help the dietician and exercise specialist know what each specific employee needs to help them to be a healthier person.

Diet and nutrition

Diet and nutrition is a very important aspect of any wellness program especially because of the amount of people who are overweight in the workplace today. It is important that employees know what foods they should eat to be healthy since there is such a large variety of food options available.

Diet wellness programs can help employees understand what foods could help put a stop to diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. They can also learn what foods to avoid that will help them to lose weight as well as prevent these diseases. Employees can learn tips from diet wellness programs that will help them eat healthier at home and on the job, and how to shop for and prepare healthy foods.

Exercise

Exercise wellness programs go hand in hand with diet or nutrition wellness programs. Exercise is also needed in an employee's life to help prevent disease and to stay healthy.
Exercise programs will teach employees how to be more active throughout the day, even if they have a desk job. They will help them to figure out how they can fit exercise into their daily routine and help employees to figure out what types of exercise would be most fun and best for their individual situation. There are even programs that will help teach stretches and some light strength exercises that an employee can do during lunch or during a ten minute break.

When employees learn and apply what they learn about nutrition and exercise they will lose weight faster and in a healthier way. People who exercise and eat right are healthier people. Therefore, employees will have less of a chance of getting diseases, as well as have fewer sick days.

Team-building Activities

Wellness programs my also have team-building activities for the employees in an office. These activities will help co-workers build friendships, learn how to work together, and they can help employees learn how to handle things such as job stress and how to get along with others. These activities can help improve morale and increase productivity.
