Wellness programs to lose weight

weightloss_2.jpg
Obesity is costing employers $12.7 billion dollars a year in lost production costs, sick leave benefits, and health insurance premiums. With such a large amount of money going out the window, it is no wonder why employers are implementing wellness programs to help their employees lose weight and improve their health.

One of the best ways to help your employees lose weight is to consult a fitness expert. Most gym memberships come with access to a personal trainer that will help people create a workout routine for their body. Bringing a personal trainer and a nutrition expert to your office will do wonders for some of the employees that are struggling with weight loss. The personal trainer and nutrition expert will be able to create a diet and exercise program for every single employee. Make sure you bring them in a few times so they can track the progress of your employees to make sure they are staying on target with their goals.

Employers need to find ways to continually encourage their employees to lose weight. Since dieting and exercise is not easy, you need to be the support group for your employees that may get discouraged. Some employees may drop 10 pounds in the first while other employees actually gain a few pounds. This is because muscle weighs more than fat, as they keep burning fat and adding muscle, they will start to lose weight. Try to implement the wellness program over the summer months when there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available at the store and at markets.

Bring in some healthy snacks for your employees like vegetable and fruit platters. This will help your employees avoid the temptation to snack on sugary and salty snacks. Make sure you also offer them water, juice, and milk when you have staff meetings where you furnish the food. When people only have access to healthy snacks, they are less likely to snack on unhealthy foods.

Keep a record of your employee's progress. Have them report to you their weekly goals and progress. This way you can continue encouraging them when they are getting discouraged or when they are starting to fall behind on their goals. Remember that this information is private so you should never tell your other employees what they weight and how they are doing. One way you can help everyone to stay on top of their goals is to add up the amount of weight people have lost as a group and send that number out in a weekly email to continue encouraging your employees to work harder.

For some people, getting to the gym may be their struggle. Give them an extra 15 minutes for lunch where they must do something physical like walking outside the building, doing stretches or yoga in the break room, or running on the treadmill. If you employees can get in 30 minutes of exercise during their workday, they will be able to improve their health. They may not drop all the weight they want to, but they will increase their lung capacity and overall physical and mental health.

A fun way to encourage exercise during work hours is to hold your staff meeting outside. If you have a small group, you can all go for a walk and discuss your company issues. If you have a larger staff, consider holding a yoga class at the beginning of the staff meeting. This will help to rejuvenate your staff and they will feel relaxed and at ease during staff meeting. Yoga is great for the body because it strengthens the body and the mind. It also helps to reduce stress, which is essential in a busy office environment.
