Why it is important to encourage your employees to exercise

America is fast becoming a slave to things that are "convenient."We have remote controls for the TV; we have drive up windows banks and fast food restaurants; and we have elevators everywhere.Obesity is becoming a huge problem among Americans because we love "convenient" things, and have become lazy.As a business owner you are probably thinking so what? What does obesity have to do with the way I run my business? If my employee is doing their job, then it doesn't affect me.But that's where you are wrong. There are many reasons why it is important to encourage your employees to exercise.Let's take a look at some of them.

1. Exercise along with a healthy diet gives employees the energy they need to get through the work day.It is been statistically proven that by getting at least 30 minutes of continuous exercise during the day improves a person's mental and physical well being.Would you encourage your employees to exercise if you knew they would perform their given responsibilities better? And if that meant a better quality product which ultimately meant more sales for the business, would you encourage it then?I think you might spend a few extra minutes trying to encourage all your employees to get out and get fit wouldn't you?

2. The average American today is working about 2000 hours a year. They are working longer days, more hours, and probably not getting paid what they deserve. This can lead to a lot of stress on employees and a lack of motivation to basically perform well anywhere.Exercise contributes to maintaining a healthy weight, less stress, and how well a person sleeps at night.Exercise releases certain endorphins which help with stress and well being. And since a person's well being is directly related to how they act and work doesn't it sound like a good idea to get your employees more active?

3. Not only is exercise good for your mental and physical well being, but without it, it can cost you money. Not all business owners know and understand that when they have employees that are overweight and physically unfit, it's going to cost them more money to hire them.

Here's how:
-

  • Overweight employees are more likely to file for worker's compensation and as a business owner you understand that the more complaints that are filed, the more money it costs you.

  • - Employees that are physically unfit tend to also be physically unwell. This can result in being absent more often and more medical claims. And any business owner knows that when someone doesn't come in you have to either find someone to replace them (until they return) or productivity decreases.Training takes time and costs you money in the long run.Statistics have shown that overweight individuals miss ten more days than fit and trim employees.

  • - Businesses will also see that physically unfit employees will also cost them more money when it comes to health care.Overweight employees cost their employers anywhere from fifty dollars to two thousand dollars a year because of health care costs and loss of productivity. Most of our health care costs are a result of bad habits, poor nutrition, and a lack of exercise.Unhealthy employees are in fact driving up the costs of health care.

So why is it important to encourage your employees to exercise?Well, it depends on how you look at it really. What kind of employees would you rather have; ones that miss work often due to illness and injury; ones that miss work because they are stressed out and on the verge of a nervous breakdown; physically unfit mentally and physically and cost you money?Or do you want employees that will show up for work on time, have the energy required to do a little extra each day, help increase your productivity and revenue, and have a way to release the expected stress of the 9-5 job?The second employee definitely has more qualities to help your business succeed don't they? That's why it is so important to encourage your employees to exercise.
