"Prescriptions are prescriptions right?" If you've ever had to fill a prescription of buy an over the counter medicine, then you know that not all prescriptions and brands are the same. In fact there are several differences between them. Most name brand prescriptions are expensive and have to be refilled on a continual basis. That's why shopping for generic equivalents in prescriptions is one of the best ways to save some money.

Why would you shop generic?
There are people all over the world that may wonder why you would shop for generic prescriptions. Here are a few reasons:

  • The biggest reason for using generic equivalents in prescriptions is because you can decrease the cost by at least half and sometimes more than that. If you're looking to save a few bucks here and there using generic prescriptions can help you do that.

  • When a drug is said to have gone generic it simply means that the patent for the company that first produced it is up and other companies can now manufacture the drug. The cheaper price is due to competition and not to lower quality so when you shop generic you're getting the same drug.
  • Generic brand drugs can be found in just about every pharmacy around the world especially over the counter generic drug prescriptions. Some places like Wal-Mart or Target have great programs where they will sell the generic prescription medicines for as low as $4.

Why wouldn't you shop generic prescriptions?
Thousands of people have several arguments as to why they don't like shopping and using generic prescription drugs. Here are some of the reasons why some people might not shop and use generic prescriptions:

  • Concern about the quality. Some people are concerned with the quality of generic prescription drugs in comparison with the name brand medicines. Although generic medicines have to be approved by the FDA just like the name brand drugs it's a matter of comfort. If something works (even if you're paying more) then why fix it?

  • Marketing. Generally the generic prescription medicines will receive little if any form of marketing like television commercials or advertisements. It is always the brand name products that receive extensive marketing ads and will therefore usually get bought above the generic medicines. People feel safe and comfortable with what they see in ads and don't want to take the chance of something not working by buying generic prescriptions.

  • Fear of paying for something that won't work. It's sometimes a little difficult to determine whether you want to "waste" your money on a generic prescription drug or just go with the more expensive dependable one. If the generic doesn't work then it's definitely a waste of money. Most people are willing to pay the extra money because they know it will do what it's supposed to do.

So why shop for generic equivalents in prescriptions? Well, it seems that since all generic medicines have to be approved by the FDA and the cheaper price indicates competition you really have nothing to lose with buying generic prescription drugs. You're saving a ton of money and getting the same product.
