Yoga Block

A yoga block is great for perfecting yoga poses (known as asanas). If you are a beginning yoga practitioner, it will be difficult for you to master the poses without lots of practice, which is why a yoga block makes a great partner.

A yoga block acts like your yoga assistant. It offers support for the even the stiffest, most inflexible body. A yoga block will help your body relax into many different poses, particularly poses that you aren't yet strong enough to be able to perform on your own. It will offer the height and support you need to pose safely and effectively

A qualified teacher will be able to help show you how to use the block as support under the body, such as under the head and wrists during forward bends. Yoga blocks are also useful for sitting on to raise the pelvic area and allow for proper sitting and proper alignment of the spine. While meditating, a yoga block can be used to allow the legs to be crossed comfortably with the knees open to the floor.

The shape of a yoga block is typically rectangular. Average dimensions are 3 x 6 x 9 inches. Yoga blocks can be made out of different materials, including wood, foam, or tightly compressed foam.

Tips for buying a yoga block:
1. When buying a yoga block, the first very important thing to be sure to look for is consistency. If the yoga block is too saggy, then you won't receive as much support as you need. If the yoga block is too hard, it will be a burden and will get in the way of your postures.
2. Make sure that the block is strong enough that you can lean on it vertically as well as horizontally. You will most likely need to use all the different sides of the block for the many different yoga positions you will be trying.
3. Check that your block is made from nontoxic materials to have the safest, healthiest yoga experience possible.
4. Decide how many yoga blocks you will need for the different postures you want to practice. Talk to your teacher for advice.
5. Be sure to get a quality yoga block that will last for a while and won't crumble or break up after use.

There are many brands of quality yoga blocks for you to choose from, but the yoga blocks by Yoga Props come highly recommended.

Yoga Props carries foam blocks and fuzzy blocks with dimensions of 4 x 6x 10.
The foam blocks are durable, rigid blocks made from lightweight foam. A single block can support your entire body weight, and it will only compress slightly. Many people find that the slight compression of this yoga block makes it more comfortable to perform poses while another block might dig into your body during the same poses. These blocks cost $11 each, the more blocks you purchase, the more money you save. If you purchase 2-5 blocks, they are only $10 each; if you purchase 6-9 blocks, they are $9 each; if you purchase 10-19 blocks, they are $8 each; if you purchase 20-29 blocks, they are $7 each; and if you purchase 30 or more blocks, they are $6.50 each. The foam blocks come in various colors.

The fuzzy yoga blocks are made of the same foam as the regular foam blocks. They have the same qualities of the foam blocks, including the slight compression factor, which makes performing yoga moves easier on your body. The only difference is that these blocks are slightly more luxurious with a 100% cotton corduroy covering wrapped around each block. The fuzzy blocks are more expensive the regular foam blocks. They are $18 each; if you purchase 2-5, they are $16 each; if you purchase 6-9, they are $15 each, if you purchase 10 or more, they are $14 each. The fuzzy blocks also come in various colors.

It may be hard for you to watch others who are veteran yoga enthusiasts get into their poses easily as you struggle to stretch. It's important to remember, though, that you shouldn't compare yourself to others. You should enjoy yoga practice at your own pace with the help of a yoga block.
