A look at investment risk management.

Here is a look at investment risk management. A money management company is often used to manage an investor's portfolio of investments. Some savings and retirement programs are state designed so that when the investor reaches a certain age, like 65, an ample fund will be set up to sustain them.

There are programs called a 529 account and employees of many companies utilize these to build a good income. These plans are designed to fit the personnel's needs and acceptable risk levels.

Some include mutual funds. The newest plans have built into them, age based portfolios of mutual funds that include conservative or moderate, or aggressive asset programs. This plan could include stocks when the family is young and child bearing, and move to bonds and money market funds.

The advantage of this type of an investment plan is that the employee signs up and the money management firm moves up to the next level by age of investor. So the employee does not have to remember to restructure the portfolio.

If the investor does not approve of the stocks or bonds or money market programs, they have an option to withdraw their money and enroll in another plan. There is no penalty for doing this under the 529 retirement account guidelines.

Another plus for this program is the tax break. And an investor can have several accounts for themselves and their spouse and children. If the investor moves to another state, the first plan can be kept and a second on opened in the new home state.

The risks of any of these plans can be effected by how fast or slow a stock can be sold at a profit, is the issue volatile or based on a risky corporation. Add to this, how efficient is the brokerage in concluding a transaction for the sale for an investor.

Some of the risks can include:
The investor can loose the entire amount of money paid for an option in a short time. When an option expires, it has no value. So the investor or Management Company needs to move before it expires. If the broker handling this portfolio does not stay on top of these options expiration date, the whole investment can produce loss not gain. If the option is running out of time, then it may have to be sold into a secondary market.

The SEC or other regulatory agency may impose restrictions effecting a cash settlement. Some options have a feature that allows expansion of the time if this is begun prior to the expiration date. A court or other governmental agency can impose restrictions on the sale of the holdings.

Beneficial programs can also include IRAs. These have limited or no annual fees, and the investor can chose the plan that fits their needs and budget.

There are several brokerages that offer a free software application that will empower the investor to view their portfolio with the profits or gains visible on screen as well as a projection of the proposed profits. This is called Gains keeper, and some brokerages will let an investor download and use it. Also the software will print reports of gains and losses from the portfolio. The investor can export the numbers onto tax preparation forms, like Excel and Text file. There is the capability to review an audit trail of any particular holding.

Regardless if an investor wants to manage the stocks and bonds and treasury bonds, there is software in place that investors can use. Also there are some insurance to help trim the edge from the risks. Brokerage houses have strict control imposed by the licensing bureaus in each state. Also the federal SEC has standards and education requirements before a broken can start to deal with the brokerages as employees.

As you look at investment risk management, you will find that there are ways to get control and knowledge to help you invest more wisely.
