Eating out is killing your budget
Write it down Most people realize that they are spending more than they earn, but they may not really know where the money they spend is actually going. For a person to see that eating out is killing their budget, they need to sit down and write a list of what they have spent their money on over the past month. They should keep track of the number of times they eat out and how much they spent each time. Most of the time people will be shocked at how much they spend on eating out. Many times people will end up spending their entire month's food budget on one or two weeks of eating out. After a person has gotten over the shock of just how much of their budget goes to eating out, they should calculate roughly how much they would spend if they were to eat at home instead. Most people will find that the amount that they spend on each person when they make dinner at home cannot be used to purchase anything but a couple of burgers off the dollar menu at a local fast food restaurant. Lunches Many people who work in an office may feel the pressure of eating out during their lunch break every day with their coworkers. But eating out every day for lunch is probably one of the worst things that anyone can do when it comes to their budget. Eating out for lunch probably costs close to three times as much when compared to packing a lunch. Of course this can vary depending on the restaurant and choice of entrée. But generally eating lunch at a restaurant will cost much more than it would cost to brown bag it instead. Bringing a lunch to work does not have to mean a person is stuck with peanut butter and jelly each day. A person can rotate their lunches, with several types of sandwiches, leftovers, etc., so that they get a good variety and are not stuck with the same thing day after day. And since preparing a lunch does take time, a person can do it the night before, so that they do not add one more task to accomplish before they head off to work each morning. The advice When a person or a family is in desperate need of financial help, a financial advisor will usually ask them how often they go out to eat. The amount of money that a family will spend to eat dinner in a restaurant even just once or twice a week can kill just about any families' budget. Some people or families may have to start out slowly to make changes. It can be a big shock to a person or family who is used to eating out several times a week to go right to eating at home all of the time. They can start out slowly by only eating out at dinner and packing their lunch each day instead of eating out. Then they can begin to only eat out once or twice a week, maybe only on weekends. And then they can reduce the amount of time they eat out to once or twice a month. Grocery shopping will have to become a bigger part of their lives just as cooking will. But over time they will get used to their new lifestyle and they will see how much better their budget is faring.
