Green investments
What are green investments? Green investments are just like any other investment such as stocks and mutual funds but the investments are made in companies that are dedicated to conserving natural resources, discovering and producing alternative energy sources, implementing clean air and clean water projects, and/or participating in other environmentally mindful business practices.
How can someone invest in green investments? For people who know the stock market very well, there are a lot of "pure-play" companies that are traded on major stock exchanges. These companies are on the leading edge of green companies. "Pure-play" companies are companies that are dedicated to a certain line of business. Companies that are dependent on one product would be considered pure play. Some of these companies are those that are large companies that make a lot of money in regular stock and are branching out and developing eco-friendly products. There are other ways to achieve green investing such as exchange-traded funds or ETFs and Mutual funds.ETFs are securities that track an index but trades similar to a stock on an exchange. As ETFs are bought and sold throughout the day they experience price changes. It is different than a mutual fund since it can be traded like a stock and doesn't have its net asset value calculated everyday. With mutual funds, a professional portfolio manager would make the decisions about which green companies to invest in based on how much money it is predicted to make. Know the companies People have different ideas for what they consider "green." Because this is the case, there are also some questions over what really green investment really includes. For example, what should a business have to qualify it as a green business? There could be a business that may produce oil, but has a history of other environmental friendly practices. Though it may be protecting the environment in other ways, it is also causing damage to the earth as it drills for oil every day. Since some people believe that burning fossil fuel contributes highly to global warming they may not consider purchasing this particular stock as a green investment. Before investing in certain "green" companies, the investor should research the companies to make sure that the companies involved in the particular investment match their own definition of "green." Where is the money going? There are several different places where money from green investments ends up. The majority of the money goes toward building up new sustainable energy assets. Wind generators, hydro-electric, solar power, and geothermal sources are some of the examples of the places and projects where investors' money may go.
