How product design relates to marketing
How your product looks means everything to your sales. If your product is horrible and breaks after just one use, then people won't buy it again and will tell their friends, and blog about it. Your sales will drop and you will probably end up without a company anymore. However, if you have a great product and it is packaged really bad, the same thing can happen. People don't buy something that looks like it's trash or looks like a three year old designed the cover and wrapping. You want to make sure that your product is really great and that it has the best possible packaging too. When you design your packaging for your product, make sure that you have a professional do it, or that a professional (or a few) give you their advice. Try to do some surveys if you can. Get their opinions and advice. If they say you should probably change it because the colors are too bright or too dull, take their advice. Don't be hurt or upset. They are just giving you advice and letting you know that it doesn't stand out and will be overlooked by customers. Take the time to do your research. Just doing this will save you tons of time and money. When you design the packaging you want the design to stand out, but also have it symbolize or stand for something. That way you can use it in your advertisements and marketing campaigns. Just because your product may look great doesn't mean that it will sell. Your marketing has to match the product's design. If you have a cowboy themed product design and do a Barbie doll commercial, it won't make sense to your customers. They won't understand what you are doing. You have to connect to the product and its design and use that connection in your advertisements and marketing campaigns. Many companies change their logos and the designs on their packages all the time. Make sure that you are thinking about that too. Sometimes just changing the packaging will help you increase your sales and profits. If you are thinking about changing the design on your product follow this advice. When a company changes their packaging and doesn't keep any of the same logos or designs, it confuses buyers. Often times the product is looked over and people think the store stopped selling it or the company doesn't make it anymore. Make sure you change things slowly or keep many of the same colors and themes. If you don't, you will likely lose a lot of business because your customers will be confused and won't realize that the product was packaged differently. If you are changing the packaging, you can also advertise it more. If you advertise the new packaging with the product, it helps to assure customers that the product is still available, it just has a new look. You will probably have to advertise a little more the first little while that the packaging is changed but it will help to keep sales strong. When you design the packaging you want the design to stand out, but also have it symbolize or stand for something. That way you can use it in your advertisements and marketing campaigns.
