There are several common marketing mistakes that every business owner would do well to avoid. While most marketing mistakes are fairly small, and won't cost you too much, there are several larger ones that can you simply cannot afford to make. These larger marketing mistakes can result in both wasted time and the loss of a lot of money. The good news is that there is lots of information about the marketing mistakes you want to avoid making. So before you write your next marketing plan, here are marketing mistakes you must avoid-

- Not doing the right market research-Market research is the foundation of every effective marketing plan. The reality is that no matter how good your product or service looks on paper, if you haven't found out who will want to buy it, it will do you little good. You need to take the time (and spend the money), to determine if there is a large enough pool of potential customers, to justify the production of the product. Only by doing the right amount of market research can you determine if you are using the right marketing venues to attract your target customers. A helpful tool in this endeavor is the use of social media. Many businesses are turning to social media in order to get in touch with what their customers are looking for and to find out how much they are willing to spend on any particular product or service. Best of all social media sites are usually free to use, and gain yield a great deal of important information.
- Moving to fast with the marketing-Too many times businesses try to rush the marketing of their product or service, without taking the time to determine if their marketing strategy is really being effective. You will need to be patient and give your marketing efforts some time to yield results. You should keep in mind that it may take some trial and error, to determine what your customers will respond to. If you try to rush your marketing efforts, you will most likely have the wrong data, or worse yet, no marketing results at all.
- Marketing before production-It can become a huge problem if you start to market a product that you don't have in production or one that isn't ready to sell. Most businesses find that it is best to have at least a small stock of the product on hand, before any marketing efforts begin. While you want to know what the true response to your product will be, keep in mind that if you are not able to supply your product, your customers will quickly lose their goodwill toward you and worse yet, you could face legal ramifications. You want to do everything you can to avoid having customers waiting for backorders, since this is one of the fastest ways to have customer fall out.
- Spreading your marketing efforts to thin-Often times businesses make the mistake of thinking that they need to be everywhere in their marketing effort. The reality is that every business, (even the largest ones) have a marketing budget. You need to make sure that your dollars are being spent in the most effective way possible. By trying every marketing strategy, instead of just focusing on the most effective ones, for your target market, you are just wasting time and money.
- Not having an online presence-Being online has become the new frontier of marketing. When businesses fail to have an online presence, or have a poor one, they are neglecting one of the easiest ways to market their product or service. Today, businesses that market online are not just reaching thousands of potential customers, but literally millions. If you do not position your business online, you are missing out on a giant marketing opportunity.
