While creating a marketing plan seems simple, because of how straightforward the process is there are still things that can go wrong. Many businesses that have never created a marketing plan before make mistakes when creating their marketing plan. If you're getting ready to create your first marketing plan here are some of the mistakes that you need to watch out for. If you want to create a successful marketing plan, you will need to make sure that you avoid these common mistakes.

Here are the mistakes that you will want to avoid when creating your marketing plan.

Number one: Too much information

The biggest mistake that people make when creating their marketing plan is that they put too much information into the marketing plan. You are going to need to gather background information on your competitors, your industry, plus how it relates to the market, and other background information. The thing you want to avoid doing is focusing too much on this type of information because you do not need pages of information on these sections. Instead, with your marketing plan you want to mainly focus on the goals that you want to accomplish, how you plan to accomplish those goals and what marketing tactics you are going to be using.

Number two: No objective

This is usually caused from people being too caught up in the background data that is needed to start planning your marketing plan. It can also be caused from people becoming focused on marketing tactics that they will be using. What you need to do to avoid making this mistake is to clearly state your strategic objectives. You want to lay out what you want to do, so you know the steps you will need to take to get there. For example, a strategic objective would be to capture 3% of the market share from your competitors. Once you have gotten your objective figured out, figuring out the tactics that you are going to be using will be easy.

Number three: Proofreading

Many people do not bother to have other people read their marketing plan once they have written it, they think once it is written down it is set in stone. You want to avoid this by finding somebody else to read it and offer you their opinion. Who you get to read it doesn't really matter, but you want to have somebody who knows about your business goals. You want them to read the marketing plan and offer you constructive criticism on your marketing goals. You want them to question what you are trying to do and how you plan to get there, you don't want them to rewrite the entire plan.

Number four: Connected to your business plan

Another mistake that people can make when writing a marketing plan is that they do not connect their marketing plan to their overall business plan. If your marketing plan does not line up with your business plan, the chances are high that you are not going to succeed with your marketing goals.

Number five: No way of measuring the results

Another mistake that people make when creating a marketing budget is they include a marketing budget in their overall plan but they often leave out how they are going to measure the success that they have had with their marketing plans. You want to include some specific ways that you plan to measure how successful your marketing plan is going to be. When it comes to measuring how successful your marketing plan is you do not need to use a complex formula to track your results, you can keep it simple by looking at your revenue to see if it has increased or see if you have had an increase in sales during the past month.
