A successful marketing strategy is vital for the success and promotion of a company's products and services. In order to have a great marketing strategy, it is important to know the fundamentals of a marketing strategy.

A few fundamentals of successful marketing include:

Know the purpose of marketing.
Many times, marketing is often confused with sales or public relations. Marketing deals primarily with product awareness and promotion. Those involved with marketing work to promote a specific product or service a company or organization offers. Marketing professionals will concern themselves with the products the company provides, the customers and their needs, and then work to anticipate what the next product will be or how to promote it.


While marketing works to reach sales prospects and promote the products, those in sales work to actually close the sale with a signed contract and agreement. Marketing and sales work hand in hand with each other, and both are needed for business to be successful.

PR, or public relations, handles the image of the company itself, whereas marketing is concerned primarily with products. A public relations professional is more concerned with the public's view of the company and the company's reputation rather than trying to get the public to purchase the products.

Have a plan.
Another fundamental of a marketing strategy is a well-written marketing plan that maps out your strategy. It should take into consideration your long-term objectives and have short term goals in order to reach those objectives. Your goals should be measurable within a specific time frame. In addition, the plan should detail specifics such as team members who will be working towards the goals, deadlines, and budgetary restrictions.

Identify a target market and niche.
You can identify your target market by deciding who to market your products and services to. Once you know who you would like to market your services to, you can then narrow down your marketing efforts. Your target market can be defined in terms of age, income, gender, industry, and more. Along with identifying a target market, you should also find a niche. This is especially important for setting yourself apart from the competition. Look for areas within your market that are not as dominated as others.

Determine pricing.
Your pricing strategy will play a huge role in your marketing strategy and the overall success of your business. When determining pricing, there are a number of things to take into consideration. First of all, you will want to do research of your competitors and find out how much they are charging. If you are going to charge more for your products and services than your competitors, you should be prepared with solid justification for doing so. You will also need to make sure that your pricing is adjusted with overhead taken into consideration, so you will make a profit.

Continually evaluate your strategy.
In order to determine whether or not your marketing strategy is successful, you should be continually evaluating your marketing techniques. Have customers fill out questionnaires, send postcards, and conduct surveys. In addition, make sure you know how your customers learned about you.

You should also be tracking your success through sales numbers as well. If your profits have increased after a particular campaign or task, you can assume your marketing campaign was successful.
