Because hiring a professional firm to keep track of your customer's wants and needs and to crunch numbers for you is very expensive, if you are a small business then you probably do not want to spend your money in that way.Instead, start investigating on your own.Talk to your customers and ask them what they want.Mingle with them as they are shopping in your store and see what attracts them to certain products.Get to know your customers and send them Christmas cards, birthday cards, and more, so that they feel like they have a friend who happens to provide particular products and services.
