Affiliate marketing is a form of marketing that business can use to promote their products or services online through different merchants' websites. If used properly affiliate marketing can be very productive for your business because you will be able to draw in more potential customers each month. Here are some things that your business can do to help make your affiliate marketing more productive.

Number one: Set guidelines

Set guidelines and monitor affiliates. Not everybody uses things in the same way so you need to determine how your affiliates can use your related search terms, e-mail contacts and brand. Affiliate marketing is not the same for every company, what works for one company will probably not work for another so the marketing needs to be highly diversified. For example, some sites might want offers that are custom made for them, while other sites might prefer a higher rate of commission for putting up your ad banner. Two things you can do to help set guidelines and monitor affiliates is to outline the structure for your commissions and make sure you define exactly who the customer belongs to. You will also need to clearly define your search terms because there could be competition for the same terms between merchants and affiliates.

Number two: Merchandising communication and support

Your business will need to provide merchandising communication and support to your affiliates. This is important because you are developing marketing materials for affiliates that can be used on their website to help improve the customers shopping experience. A happy customer is usually a returning customer, which all leads to more money for everybody involved in the transaction. One thing you can do is keep the website's marketing materials up to date, if you have out dated promotions on the website consumers are most likely not going to return to see if you have updated the website rather they are going to go elsewhere to make the purchase. You should also provide on-site merchandising and shopping conversion support.

Number three: In-house team

You need to create an in-house team that is designed to communicate with affiliates, as well as to support affiliates; this will help to maximize the programs results and will ensure that the program will stay on course. The in-house team's main job will be to be responsive to affiliates' needs, so when hiring them you should look for people who can be described as analytical, creative, sales-oriented, and business minded. You also need to keep in mind that affiliate managers will be providing sales support, so when hiring for this team you are going to want to hire highly technical people.

Number four: Contacting affiliates

Whenever you need to contact your affiliates, you should do it personally rather than having a third party contact them. This is important becauseyour affiliates are a part of your business you are going to want to show them that you sincerely care about their business and not just your own company. Keep in mind that your business relationship with affiliates is part of having a successful business.

Number five: Tier affiliates

When working with affiliates you will want to tier your affiliates. This is important because not all of your affiliates are going to be treated the same, some will need to have more attention while others you can simply let loose. With your affiliates, some will perform better than others so always keep in mind that your top affiliates should receive the best support, you still do not want to ignore your other affiliates. You should still provide support to the other affiliates to help increase their growth and help to expand your business. In affiliate marketing, the potential for turnovers is extremely high so by always having a new group ready you will be prepared for those unexpected turnovers.
