Why marketing is so key to making profits

This may seem like a rudimentary question to some, but the plain fact is that everyone in business needs to review the importance of marketing from time to time. From time to time, we need to remind ourselves just why it is we rely on marketing for our bread and butter. Let's look at a few of the reasons why marketing is so key to making profits.

- Being in business is expensive. Let's say, for example, that we're producing a line of funny T-shirts. We're producing and selling these hilarious T-shirts that are very popular with the masses-and that's a good thing, right? I mean, the whole point of being in businesses is to develop a product or service that people really want, and to sell it to them at a good price, and to make a good living that way. But complications do arise. Let's say that we've only recently started selling these T-shirts and the demand rises too sharply for us to keep up with. Lots of people want them, but we can't afford to (a) make X number of T-shirts and (b) send them all over the country and so forth.

- Now, this may seem like a funny angle to approach the question: Why is marketing so key to making profits? But what we're doing is trying a different approach, to get the juices in the brain flowing. In the case of the young businesspeople trying to get their T-shirt business off the ground, their problem is too much success right off the bat. And probably, probably, the source of their problem is-the wrong marketing approach. Here they have all these people clamoring for T-shirts, yet they can't answer the clamor satisfactorily because they were unprepared. Marketing is key to making profits not only because it gets your service or product or whatever out there in front of the public-marketing is also key to profits because it helps you to prepare. Marketing is key to profits because it helps businesspeople say what they want to say about their service or product, and also say it at the right time, in the right place.

- The young, rash, talented T-shirt makers knew they had a good product. They knew people would want their T-shirts, that they'd sell a bundle. So they threw up a cheap web site and did some email advertising at local colleges and bang-suddenly they're in business all right, exactly as they predicted. But what they didn't predict, and what a good marketing scheme would have helped them to predict, is how unprepared they'd be for their prediction. There's more to making profits than becoming popular. There's more to making profits than having something everybody wants. There's more to marketing, then, than a businessperson making something popular by effectively presenting it to the public.

- The young, rash, talented, naive T-shirt makers, had they wanted to do things right, would have created a marketing scheme along with their wonderful T-shirts. They would have known that marketing is key to making profits because it's a guide to the whole business enterprise. They wouldn't have flooded the local colleges with email advertisements, knowing that they weren't prepared for a flood-like response. Creating a disciplined marketing scheme, in other words, would have disciplined them and prepared them for the realities of success. Marketing is key to making profits because it helps us to learn that the realities of success in business are often as complicated, demanding, stressful (or more so) than the realities of failure in business.

- When considering the question of why marketing is so key to making profits, it's important that we come at it from different, creative angles. Marketing is key to making profits in a variety of ways, a whole dazzling rainbow of ways, and all the ways should work together so that we can make order out of chaos.
