When it comes to having a small business online many people start one up because it is so easy to do and does not cost very much to run. However, just because you start a small business online that does not mean that you are going to be successful. In fact, most small business online fail because the business owners do not know how to run their small business online.

Number one: How you treat your business
You are going to need to treat your online business just like any other business. Most online businesses are operated from home, which your small business that you are talking online will be run from home or from the physical location of your small business. When running a business from home business owners tend to not be effective because they get caught up in other things. For example, a friend stops by to see you and rather than tending to your business you go out and grab a bite to eat or sit and visit. You can even get distracted when you are on the computer, checking the news or surfing the web. To be successful at running your online business you will need to treat it like a business and work accordingly, which means setting and accomplishing goals for the short term and long term.

Number two: Bottom line
You need to understand what your bottom line is. Having an online business is similar to having an offline business; you need to know how much your overhead is so that you know how much money you are actually earning. You will see a variety of savings from running your online business from home because you won't have rent, but there are still plenty of other things you have to consider. If you hire freelancers for part of your website you will have to [pay their fees, you have taxes to pay, advertising, hosting, etc. All of these things affect how much money you are going to earn from your business or how much you are going to lose.

Number three: Customer base
To keep your customer base you are going to need to work towards expanding your customer base. Getting a customer base for your online business is just as much work as getting customers for your physical small business. If you are lucky some of your current customers will move to your online store. What you are going to want to do is get your customers to keep coming back for repeat business. One way to increase the chances of this happening is to use an auto responder to stay in contact with your customers and prospective customers. You can also offer incentives as a way to increase sales and add to your future sales.

When it comes to running your online business, do everything that you enjoy doing and outsource the rest. In the beginning you might be able to do everything on your own but over time your business is going to expand and you are going to have more things to keep up on. As your business expands and becomes more profitable it is a good idea to outsource the things that are hard for you to do or that you just don't enjoy doing. The internet is going to give you access to a variety of freelancers who are more than willing to do the work for you, such as providing content for your website or doing your payroll.
