4 tips for using a questionnaire for effective target marketing

1. Define objectives precisely.This should be accomplished before you've even finished the questionnaire.Ask yourself what problems will the results of your questionnaire solve?What do you want to know?How will the results be incorporated into decisions or the operations of your company? How well will the information help you meet your objectives?How much detail do you need?Is there another way to get this information?If you can answer these questions, your survey will be much more concise and productive.

2. Create a well-written questionnaire. When writing your questionnaire, keep in mind the points from tip #1.You want to be sure that you're choosing the best format for your questionnaire.If it is to be a hand-written survey, answers such as "very strongly agree, strongly agree, very strongly disagree," works well, but those answers are not so effective on a phone questionnaire.Be aware that writing a questionnaire for personal delivery, mail, or telephone should all contain different characteristics.Use simple, familiar words wherever you can.Define unfamiliar or technical terms.Avoid slang terms and highly-charged emotional words.Avoid questions that could be answered in more than one way.Be sure that your questionnaire is free of spelling and grammatical errors.Such errors are unprofessional and could even confuse your participant.
3. Do some research on your target audience.Before writing your questionnaire, you should know the basic demographics of your target group.If you want to know if the average white-middle class housewife thinks about your new laundry detergent, be sure that you're asking questions that such a group will responds to.If you want to know what lower-income working Latinos think of the same product, you will need to adjust your questionnaire accordingly.Perhaps you would use a simpler vocabulary, being aware that some of your participants may not be 100% fluent in English.It may even be beneficial to do a pilot study with your questionnaire on a few dozen of your target group.This will let you know if you're heading in the right direction or not.
4. Manage the project carefully.Once you've finished assembling your questionnaire, you need to carefully monitor its administration.Developing and testing isn't enough.You must take care that you minimize errors on your questionnaire.Most professional researchers consider a 50% to 60% response rate to be acceptable.If you are mailing your questionnaires to participants, you should follows these steps to maximize responses: 1-send an introductory notice; 2-send a questionnaire with a personalized letter; 3-send a follow-up postcard with either a thank-you (if they've returned the completed questionnaire) or a kind reminder; 4-if the participant has still not returned the questionnaire, send another copy in hopes that they will respond.

Doing these steps does not guarantee that you will be effective in your target marketing.But it does greatly improve your chances of success.
