Becoming a company people want to work for

There are always those rumors floating around about companies that are just wonderful to work for. You hear things like "they only make you work 6 hours a day" or "you have the option to work outside or from home". The more we hear about these spectacular companies, the harder it is to find them. Becoming a company people want to work for doesn't mean you need to pay thousands of dollars to have a private lake installed in the middle of your "campus", you simply need to find ways to make your business more attractive the to right type of employees.

Step # 1 - Money

Everyone will say they don't work for the money, but that is simply not true. Money motivates people. While we all work for personal fulfillment in one way or another, we want to get paid what we are worth. Money provides people with things like cars, houses, vacations, children's educations, etc. If you really want to attract the good employees, you need to be willing to pay them. Some businesses men and women will take pay cuts to come work for smaller businesses, however don't expect this small amount to last forever.

As your company becomes more successful, they will ask for a raise or they will move on. If you can't afford to pay them the big bucks, you'd better be prepared to offer some other attractive things like excellent health and dental benefits, stock options, and good retirement plans. To avoid losing your shining starts, have yearly evaluations with them to talk about their wages. This way you can find out if they are happy with what they are making or if they are seeking a new job for higher compensation.


Step # 2 - Organization

People like to work for a company that has a plan. Walking into a new office and not knowing what to do will quickly demoralize and de-motivate people. Have a plan for your business; let your employees know where you are headed. Have some goals that they can see along with steps on how you are planning to reach those goals. Spend time actually training them. Far too often we try to get our new talent on the job so quickly that we fail to spend enough time on the training. Perhaps they are skilled in marketing, but they lack the knowledge of the accounting software that delivers their reports. Pay attention to all the small details of everyone's jobs and make sure they understand how to do them before you hire them and throw them into the lions den.

Step # 3 - Recognition

Employees liked to be noticed for their work. Even sending out a quick email that tells them how good they are doing can help to improve their morale. Having high morale is essential to building up a positive work environment and attracting the right type of employees. Try to host monthly luncheons and other events where you recognize your employees and thank them for their hard work. Offer rewards to employees that are able to accomplish goals. Don't just do boring rewards either, make them attractive rewards so other employees will work harder to get them.

Step # 4 - Growth and development

Many employees will start out motivated and it quickly fades and they become stuck in a dead-end job. Provide your employees with plenty of room for growth and development. Show them that while you may be a small business, you are moving towards the future and they can help you get there.

Step # 5 - Leadership

It is important to be a good leader. People want to work for a person they trust and respect. While you need to lead them, you also need to be one of them. Make some time for laughter in the office, this helps to ease tension and people will look forward to coming into work.
