How to choose between lawyers

An attorney at law is a lawyer. "Lawyer" means "attorney" and vice versa. An attorney at law is a person who is licensed to practice law in a particular state. An attorney at law is licensed to deal with the law. An attorney at law has been trained very extensively in the law. An attorney at law is an expert in the law.
An attorney at law, commonly called a lawyer, is a very necessary element of any well-functioning, orderly society. A well-functioning, orderly society is a law-abiding society. A law-abiding society keeps the laws of a given society. A law-abiding society follows the law. The law is a system of rules and regulations that provides order in a given society. A society, for example, makes a law against stealing. This helps things to go along smoothly. If there's no stealing, merchants can stay in business. Farmers can stay in business. Everybody can stay in business because they're being paid for their work. The law helps everything to run smoothly. An attorney at law (or lawyer) is an expert in the law who represents people when they've broken the law or when they're the victims of a law-breaker.
We've all heard the jokes. Attorneys at law are evil. Lawyers are evil. Attorneys at law will steal your last dime. Attorneys at law will steal a dollar from your grandmother and let her starve. Attorneys at law will let you rot in the street so long as they get their paycheck, their fee. "What's the difference between a lawyer and a huge, smelly bucket of rancid, curdled, yellow milk? The bucket." Etc. etc. We've all heard the jokes. We've heard those lawyer jokes a million times. There must be something to them, right? And guess what - there is something to them. There are good lawyers out there and bad lawyers out there. There are good attorneys at law out there and bad attorneys at law out there. The law, after all, is just like any business, to a certain extent. You have good guys and bad guys, lazy guys and guys that are hardworking.

Think of the law, if you will, as a huge, overwhelming maze. Let's say that someone has cheated you out of a lot of money. Let's say it's a former business partner. So, a former business partner has scammed you, has cheated you. What can you do about it? The law opens up in front of you like a vast, misty maze. There's no way you can navigate it by yourself. How do you go after your former business partner? How do you pursue him? How do you get your rights? How can you prove that he stole from you? And whom do you prove it to? It's hopeless - you're lost in the maze. You're lost, that is, until you hire an attorney at law (or lawyer) to help you. An attorney at law is a guide in the maze. An attorney at law is a confident guide, he's been trained in all the ins and outs of the maze. He'll know just what to do. He'll know how to go after your former business partner, he'll know how to get the law to pursue your former business partner until you get your money back.
The telephone book is one place to go when searching for a lawyer. The telephone book has a long, long list of lawyers to choose from. The Internet too is a good resource when it comes to finding a good lawyer or attorney at law. Just type in "attorney at law" and see what happens. You'll have hundreds of sites to choose from. You might also want to call your State Bar Association. Your State Bar Association will have a listing of every lawyer in your state and information about every lawyer in your state.
Do you know any lawyers or attorneys personally? Perhaps you can ask them for advice. Also, you can call the Better Business Bureau when trying to find a good attorney. You see, the Better Business Bureau takes complaints about everyone who's in business. If you bought something from a certain department store, for example, and they gave you terrible service, were rude, broke their promises, etc., you could turn them into the Better Business Bureau. The Better Business Bureau would list this company as one that's had a complaint made about it. The same goes for lawyers and attorneys.
You want to find a successful lawyer, an honest lawyer. You want to go with a reputable name. You don't want some smalltime, sleazy lawyer representing you. Again, you can use the Internet to find lawyers and law firms listed by national and state rankings. There are law experts out there who spend their time getting to know who the best and the worst lawyers are, and then listing that information on the web.
