How to start a spin off small business

When venturing out into the unknown with the idea of starting a small business, it can be a huge and daunting task to accomplish. It is not an easy project to get a small business off of the ground from scratch. But who says starting from scratch is how it is supposed to work? Why not take advice and even resources from someone who can help lift the business off of the ground so that it can be independent. For example, a large dairy was owned and operated by a group of brothers. One of the nephews decided he wanted to start his own spin off business that would make him more independent, yet it would in turn help the family business. He came up with an idea of growing dairy hay that he knew his family would buy from him if it was high quality. Starting off this way he was guaranteed business from the family and was able to receive enough revenue to stimulate growth in his business and eventually branched off into other directions in farming.

Taking a look at this situation as a model for starting a spin off business, there are some definite principals from it that can be applied to any business idea. Let's outline them:

1. He worked within a group of people he trusted and wanted to help.
2. He wanted to become more independent with his own business, so he found a business opportunity that would benefit the family's dairy.
3. He started off small in his business by just covering the need of the dairy by growing premium hay to feed the milk cows.
4. From the money he made, he invested it into the business to fund other opportunities.
5. The spin off business is growing and lucrative all because he started by helping back the very source that jump-started his success.

Taking a look at big business owners in the industry, such as the Rockefeller family, doing business within the family is a way to branch out into many different directions and be able to have the finances to do so. This spin off tactic can work with any company that one is affiliated with if they have the confidence to fund the project and trust that they will benefit from the investment. The problem is that people usually don't have this kind of trust outside of family ties or strong friendships. If these connections aren't available, here are some ideas to kick-start a spin off business:

1. Work for a business that is personally interesting or intriguing.
2. Get to know the people there, and build trust with them.
3. Learn from these people. How is their business successful?
4. Ask if there is a need within the business, a resource that if made easily available would greatly help the situation.
5. Draw out a business plan and show it to the boss or owner.
6. Tell them exactly what help is needed and how it will benefit them and the new business.
7. If the go ahead is given, get started and work hard.
8. When success finally comes, don't forget the people that helped to get there. Hopefully the agreement was written up into a contract. Either way, follow through.
9. Invest into other mediums to increase marketability of the business.

It is interesting to note that these steps are awfully similar to the dairy nephew. His way was just a little easier because he had the luxury of already knowing everyone in the business and having that trust and support. Not matter what is done, it is probably impossible to receive that kind of support and backing outside of a family relationship, but working to build trust and a good reputation and using those connections as a means to satisfy an ambition can be greatly rewarding. Starting a spin off business can be an opportunity to help an old business while building a new and lucrative business opportunity.
