One of the most important parts of managing your employees is making sure that you hire the right people for each job. The biggest question is how you find the right person for the job. Unfortunately there is not a perfect answer to this question because everybody goes about finding the right person differently, and what works for them might not work for you.

Here are the steps that you can follow to help find the right person for the position in your small business.

Step one:
Make sure that you really do need to hire a new employee. Before you begin the process of hiring a new employee you want to take a close look at your current employees. You want to make sure that you are utilizing all of their skills and talents, many times current employees are overlooked because managers get wrapped up in hiring somebody new for a job that can be filled from within. You also want to make sure that your businesses growth can support the hiring of a new employee, if not see if there is a way to break up the responsibilities and have more than one current employee handle the new job.

Step two:
Conduct a thorough job analysis. You want to go through and determine what the job is going to need, be sure to include specific things that the job is going to require employees to do. You also want to prioritize the list of functions that the candidate will have to perform, this way you will know what to look for when hiring an employee.

Step three:
Once you have completed the thorough job analysis you are ready to start writing a job description. You want to write a job description and job specification for the position that you are hiring based on the job analysis that you just completed. This will allow you to highlight what features an employee needs to have to even be considered for the job, but it also allows you to lay everything out there about what it is they are going to need to be doing if they get the job.

Step four:
You will also need to determine the salary for the position that you are hiring for. When determining the salary for the position you are going to want to base the final amount on internal and external equity. You do not want to pay the new person more than what your current employees are making, but you also want to make sure that you are paying about the same as other companies hiring for the same or similar position.

Step five:
You will also need to figure out where and how you are going to find qualified applicants. You want to ask yourself what the best requirement techniques are that you can use to fill the position. You are also going to want to determine the time frame that you are going to use when filling the position, how long do you have until the position needs to be filled, how long will you run ads fro, how long will you interview for, etc. Something to keep in mind is that advertising is not always the best way to recruit people for positions that need to be filled; you need to look into the various options you have to see what would work best.

Step six:
Gathering and reviewing a number of applications and resumes. Once you have reviewed them you are going to want to select the most qualified candidates for further evaluation.

Step seven:
Interview the most qualified applicants for the job position. The qualifications should be based on the job description and specifications that you selected before you began recruiting people for the position.

Step eight:
After you have completed the interview be sure to check references. This can help you weed out which people have glorified their applications just so they could get in the door.

Step nine:
Hire the best person for the job.
