In order to effectively run your small business, it is important to spend time developing your accounting method, marketing, meeting customer expectations, and working on employee retention. It is common to get so caught up in sales that business managers forget some of the important things like making sure their employees are happy in their jobs and that your books are solid. Here are some tips to help you properly manage your small business:

Tip # 1 - Confront Problems

Quite often we will focus on the problems of the company that we fail to see how to solve them. Not only do you need to find the problems, you need to confront them. Don't look for short-term resolutions to problems within the company, look for long-term solutions. Perhaps you have a machine that is starting to break down, instead of just milking it along, make an investment in it so it gets the necessary repairs to work properly. If employees are not getting along, find ways to help them learn how to work with one another. A business will only become successful if your employees can work as a cohesive unit.


Tip # 2 - Stay Fresh

It is important to keep an eye on your competitors and to understand your target audience. What types of products are they looking for? How can you convince them to keep buying your products over your competitors? If your competitors do simple things like changing their logo or packaging, make sure you are keeping up. The goal is to try and stay one step ahead of them so they are playing catch-up to your business. Always conduct market research and find out what your customers need and want. You need to be the company to deliver it to them, not your competitors.

Tip # 3 - Establish Goals

Every business needs to have some goals to pursue. Establish goals for all of the different departments and don't forget to attach deadlines to them. This way your different departments know what they need to be working on and they can do it before the deadline. Write out some goals on how you plan to operate your business on a day-to-day basis.

Create some goals that will make everyone's jobs easier and will make the customers happier. Don't just do goals for the near future; write out some long-term goals as well. Employees need to see what they are working towards. Having a 5-year plan clearly written out can help them understand why they need to do a good job and how their job will directly impact this goal.

Tip # 4 - Marketing

The heart of every business is a solid marketing department. The marketing department is in charge of assisting in product developing, promoting the products, and assisting the sales department in getting good leads. Always spend time with your marketing department to see what types of campaigns they plan to run and what resources they need to have available in order to do so. Without good marketing, it will be hard to promote your products and your business and gain the attention you need from your customers.

Tip # 5 - Accounting

It is essential to track the books. If you don't have a solid accounting system in place, purchase a software program like QuickBooks. This program will satisfy practically every need your small business may have.

Tip # 6 - Employees

Finally, always pay attention to your employees. Do not treat them like machines, let them know how much you appreciate them working for you and building your small business. Do things to recognize them instead of criticize them. After all, without good employees, it will be hard to build customer relationships.
