Have you always dreamed of starting your own small business? Don't let this be a long lost dream anymore and really take those necessary steps to turn it into a reality. Starting a small business is a great idea and it will be able to help you feel satisfaction in what you are doing. However you do need to know that it will be the greatest challenge you have ever taken on and it can be pretty time consuming. Most small business owners work odd hours and don't really get a lot of vacation time. They often end up working harder than they ever have before but if the reward of owning your own business and setting your hours is worth it, move forward with your dream!

Starting a small business is a process that takes a long time. It is not something that you can develop right away. You will need to bring forth a stellar business plan along with financial security and the right experience and brain power to make it work.

Create a list of the small business ideas that interest you and then research the industry to see what type of competition is out there. What are you passionate about and what do you want to do? You need to look into a business that you know you will love doing even if it means you won't make a ton of money doing it. After you decide on the business you will be able to start with the business plan and really taking the steps to put it into work. Consider how much revenue it will make, especially years down the road as lenders want to see a long-term investment that will pay off for them. Will the product you offer serve a niche market or are you planning to break into the larger markets?

As you are doing the research on the business you will then be able to get started on a business plan. This will help you to determine what type of equipment you need to get started, how many employees you need to hire, where you will operate the business, etc. The business plan is often referred to as a roadmap for the future. Not only will lenders use it you will reference it often in order to see the direction in which the company is headed and to update it when you do pass certain milestones.

Perfect the business plan and meet with an attorney to draw up all of the legal documents for the company. You may need to acquire the funding first but it could be the other way around. As you meet with an attorney to draw up all the details for the business, make sure you are protecting yourself with good insurance for the business so that your personal assets cannot be touched. Properly register your business as whatever it may be, LLC, S-Corporation, etc. An attorney will help you to figure this out when you are starting a small business.

Convincing a lender to give you funding will be the hard part. This is where a great business plan will become your best friend. Lenders are often hesitant to take on small businesses that are just getting started as there is no financial background to support the numbers you are giving them. Initially you may get a small loan and after a year in operation the bank may offer a larger loan.

Once you have the location and the money, get your company up and running with a phone line along with a website and start marketing the company and hiring employees to make your small business into a profitable and successful one.
