If you have struggles with employee satisfaction and have a high turnover rate, it is time to work on employee retention. Employee retention is important to the growth and future of your company. If you have a great receptionist that that customers like and that the staff members like, you need to do everything possible to keep this person. Employee retention boosts employee morale, product sales, and helps the office stay efficient.

Think of all the time you have spent training this person to be on your staff. How much will it cost you if this person leaves and you need to train a new person? Lost knowledge is difficult to cope with and it always impacts your other employees. Co-workers often have a hard time coping with the new person, especially if they were close to the person that left. Your office also cannot function at 100 percent if you have to invest some of your time into training the new person. Losing good employees is costly to a company. Here are ten easy things you can do to retain employees:

  1. Organized Work A good company has clearly defined job duties. People will not be confused about what they need to each day. They will know what is expected of them and this will reduce unnecessary stress in the office.
  2. Quality Supervision
    A lot of employees leave companies because they are unhappy with their managers. A quality manager can boost employee morale because of the way they lead their employees. If a manager is unwilling to listen to their employees, people start to feel hopeless with their job. They will feel embarrassed when they need clarification for their job assignments and other things. Make sure you have quality managers that supervise your employees if you want to keep your employees.
  3. Lack of Freedom
    What happens to a lot of employee is that they are unable to freely speak their opinion to their managers. You need to create an open-door policy for your employees and encourage people to voice their opinions. If people feel they are criticized for voicing their opinion, they will start to look for a new job.
  4. Utilization
    Employees want you to utilize their talents and their skills. People want to be recognized for what they can bring to the table. A happy, motivated employee will contribute more to their job if their managers truly utilize them in their job.
  5. Respect
    One important thing you can do to keep your employees is to treat them all with respect. Never favor one employee over another; everyone must be treated equally in the office. When you favor one employee over another, employee morale will quickly drop and people will start looking for their next job.
  6. Training
    A lot of companies do not properly invest in their training efforts and they throw an employee into the fire before they know what to do. Invest some time and money into your training so your staff members actually know how to do their job well.
  7. Growth
    People want to grow within their job; they don't want to remain in the same position forever. Provide your employees with multiple opportunities to advance their career.
  8. Recognition
    With so many things on your plate, it is easy to forget to take notice of your employees. Senior managers and owners need to notice all of their employees and thank them for a job well-done.
  9. Never Threaten Employees
    No matter how frustrated you may get with an employee, you should never threaten them in any way. When you start dangling people's jobs and incomes in front of their faces, they start to get nervous that they are on the chopping block.
  10. Rewards
    It is important to reward your employees for a job well-done. People want to be recognized and appreciated by the company they work for. Bonuses are always a great way to reward employees, even small rewards can boost employee morale.
