- Are you self motivated? If you can't will yourself out of bed and be on time for work, then you aren't going to be able to get out of bed when you are the boss. There are many ideas that seem so fun, but when reality sets in there is a lot work too.You need to make sure that you will be able to keep pushing yourself forward, this isn't something that should be started unless is it going to be followed through with.
- Do you have total commitment?Even if you are starting a small business for extra income and you are staying with your full time job, you have to have commitment. This means that you have to be willing to give up some of the things you want to do for the things that need to be done.It also means that nothing can sway you, if your boss offers you a promotion would you take it and forget the business or turn it down to pursue your dream?
- It your other half on board with you?You should know how your spouse feels about your ideas. Are they alright with you putting in all of those hours? You need to talk it over with them, they too will be affected by the long hours and sometimes the financial hardships. Is it worth the strain on your relationship if they aren't with you on this?
- Will you be able to sacrifice all of the time required? When starting a business there is a lot to get done and usually only you to do it.At first you will be spending lots of extra time getting things going and keeping things going.Vacations will probably be few and far between, you can't leave a new business to stand on its own two feet. You might miss dinner with the family and you might be canceling a date or two every now and then.
- Is this something that you love?A small business should be something that goes along with your hobbies and interests. If you are passionate about it, then the sacrifices won't seem so large. If you don't feel all that strongly about the business, then it is going to be hard for you to stay focused and find a dream.
- Are you ready to be a leader? To own a small business requires lots of leadership skills. It also requires people skills and patience. If you can't handle that type of responsibility then you just might not be ready for a business.Taking the lead is what will set you apart as a successful business owner.
- Can you see the big picture? When you look down the road a few years you should be able to see where your business is.You should be able to see the growth that you want and know that it is coming. You should also see the obstacles and know how you are going to deal with them.If you want see the future and find out how to get there, then you are already ahead of the game.Visions are what keep businesses alive and well.
