Everywhere you turn from the internet to the newspaper or even to neighbors and friends, there are opportunities to start your own small business. Some claim instant money with little work, others require hours of dull and monotonous labor. The trick is to find which home businesses will be most beneficial for you, offering reasonable profit as well as a logical amount of work. The following are tips for taking an idea for a home business and turning it into a small business.

First, you've got to have something to work with- if you already have a home business, it's probably well on its way to becoming a small business. You just need to write up a business plan and make it a legal entity. However, if you're trying to determine if your home business has what it takes to become a small business, here are some things you should consider.

1. Look for a home or small business that you will enjoy and be committed to. If you're going to be spending the majority of your day working on your business, it should be something that you can put your heart into and be self-motivated to accomplish things. You must be willing to make sacrifices to achieve success.
2. Choose something that seems stable. You want to be sure that the job you're looking into is reliable and has been around for a while. A stable company may be less likely to charge you a start up fee than a brand new one. This allows you to become familiar with the company before investing much time and money into it. This is not to say that new companies are all bad. Just be sure to do your research into the history of the company before signing up.
3. Offer a useful product. Is it something that people could use? Would you buy or use your product? Does your product fill a needed niche in the market? Will you be able to convince others to use your product? If you're unsure of the answers to these questions, you may want to reconsider starting your home business.
4. Be sure you can afford to start up and run your business. If you're going to end up in serious debt just to start up your company, you may want to seriously reconsider. Is the money making potential of the business going to exceed the costs? Are there monthly fees or hidden costs of running your home business?
Can you afford it? Be sure that regardless of how much it will cost you to run your home business you will be able to at least break even.
5. Will you be able to yield a good profit? Obviously you do not want to invest your time and money into a business that can't afford to pay your family's bills. Learn the ways that your business will make money before deciding whether or not it is for you. You may need to be willing to adapt your family's finances depending on the type of profit you yield. For example, you may only be able to pay yourself a large sum of money twice a year rather than a smaller sum every month. A situation like this can require some adjusting.
6. Are you capable of running this business? It may be beneficial for you to get additional training before starting your business. It is better to start training now than realize half way into starting your business that you're not qualified to run your own business!
7. Look for something marketable. Regardless of the type of service or product, you must be able to convince people to use or buy your product. If you don't know how to market your business you will be unable to make a profit.
