Advice for choosing long range WiFi

When it comes to choosing any type of product or getting advice on how to choose certain products there is one thing that you need to know before you can actually make that decision. The one thing that you need to know and fully understand is what the product is and what the product is about, the same thing holds true for WiFi. The reason for this is that when you are trying to get advice on the best way to hook something up or the best kind of product that is available you are going to want to be able to know everything that you can about how the product works and what the product is so that you can make the best decision, which is usually the most educated decision that you can make as well.

Here is a look at how WiFi works and what WiFi is exactly:

  • Basically WiFi, which stands for wireless fidelity, is a wireless network. People have them in there homes or can use them in public places. The public places are becoming known as WiFi hot spots. Basically what happens is that the computers or cell phones are allowed to connect to the internet without any type of wires, which is why the network is called a wireless network. Basically when creating a wireless network the computer and the router communicate with each other, in fact it is very similar to a two way radio communication. What happens is that first a computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits that data using an antenna. Then the wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. After decoding the data it sends the information to the internet using a wired Ethernet connection. And the process will also work in reverse.

Here are some things to consider when choosing long range WiFi.

Tip one:
The first thing that you are going to want to look for is that your computer has the right wireless gear. This is usually something that is a problem when you have an older computer because of the fact that most new desktop and laptop computers come with built-in wireless transmitters. But if your computer doesn't come with it or is older and doesn't have a wireless adapter you can buy one that plugs into the PC card slot (laptop) or USB port (Desktop). One thing that you want to be aware of when choosing a wireless adapter is that the adapter can use more than one 802.11 standard.

Tip two:
The next thing that you are going to need to consider is a wireless router. You are only going to have to consider this if you are going to be creating a wireless network in your home. The good news is that it is actually rather easy and inexpensive to do. But if you have a larger house then you are going to need a long range WiFi connection so you are going to need certain types of equipment, with the router being one of them. For a long range connection you are going to want to choose w ireless router that has a wider reception areas than others. The wider the reception area, the more miles it covers, the farther away you can be and still connect to the WiFi.

Tip three:
You are also going to want to take a look at the antennas that come with your wireless router, the better the antenna the better the signal they can receive. But not only is the antenna on the wireless router important, but so is the type of wireless adapter. The more power and stronger the signal strength the more leeway you are going to have when it comes to connecting to your WiFi from a long range.
