When it comes to the best ultra compact digital cameras Canon and Casio have traditionally been the leaders in this category. When using the phrase ultra compact digital camera, I am referring to a digital camera that is the size of a mobile phone and can be slipped into any pocket. Commonly the sensor in an ultra compact camera is very small and therefore it picks up a lot of noise along with the image. Your images may look "snowy" if taken at twilight or indoors without using flash. Some of the best ultra compact digital cameras are:

  1. Casio Exilim Card EX-S600. This is the thinnest digital camera available. One of the worst features this camera has is to review photos, you press the playback button on the rear, if you don't remember to press the adjacent camera button the shutter release is disabled and you will not be able to take any more photos.
  2. Canon PowerShot SD7000. This digital camera is substantially larger than the Casio, but offers a higher image quality, especially indoors and in low light. One of the worst features this camera has is the tiny control wheel on the right and side, the symbols are so small they are almost impossible to read.
  3. Olympus 720SW. This digital camera is water and shock proof, great for using in the pool. It offers a simple user interface but lacks an optical viewfinder.

If you are looking for a digital camera that is not as small in size but still compact enough to fit into a coat pocket or purse here are some of the best compact digital cameras.

  1. Fuji F30. This compact digital camera does not have a playback mode, in which you can get stuck on. You press the review button to view photos you have taken and if you see something you want to photograph, simply press the shutter button release and the camera instantly switches recording mode. This digital camera includes a lightweight rechargeable Lith-Ion battery. One of the drawbacks is no optical viewfinder, if you take a picture while holding the camera vertically, the image will show up sideways on your computer and you will have to use software to rotate it.

  2. Canon PowerShot A640.This digital camera offers quality images at a competitive price. This camera is one of the heavier compact digital cameras because of the four AA batteries it requires.
These compact digital cameras have larger sensors than the ultra compact digital cameras, which results in better low light performance. Compact digital cameras are a good choice for travel when you know that you will want to take a photo every 15 to 20 minutes. Some good compact digital cameras priced around $150.00 are the Kodak Easyshare C330 and the Canon A410.

Here are a few other digital cameras with reasonable prices that may be worth looking into. The first is a Sony Cybershot DSC-S600 this 6.0 mega pixel camera features a 3X optical zoom and is priced around $200.00.The Fuji Finepix 2650 is a 2 mega pixel camera that provides a nice image quality. It includes a 3X optical zoom and shoots short video clips for a price around $100.00. And if you are looking for a digital camera that is durable and tough for small children, you may want to try the Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera. This is a 1.3 mega pixel camera that is rugged enough to trust with small children. It is easy for kids to hold and use. This camera is reasonably priced and is considered a good value for the money.
