Trying to choose a digital camera can be a very scary and overwhelming experience. There are so many cameras, with so many features and options to choose from, you may begin to feel like you are alone in a world full of mega pixels and memory cards. When you decide you would like to purchase a digital camera, don't head for the nearest electronics store, instead ask yourself a few important questions. Know your options and needs before reaching for your car keys.

  • What will you mainly take pictures of using your digital camera? Will it be for taking pictures of the kids playing or at soccer practice? Or will you be traveling, and want to take photographs of the landscape? Knowing what you will be photographing will help to determine what features and options are important. For example, taking pictures of the kids, you may want a camera that shoots pictures at high speed. If you typically take pictures of the landscape you may want a digital camera that has a wide variety of scene modes. Most cameras have several options and features you may never use. A digital camera loaded with options and features, most likely will have a very large price tag.You don't want to spend more money on a digital camera that is packed full of features and options you will never use.
    • Another important question to ask yourself is how much money do you want to spend? Before leaving the house, decide how much money can afford to spend. This doesn't have to be an exact, stick to no matter what figure. Just make sure you know approximately what you are willing to spend, this will help you to avoid cameras that you can not afford.
    • What is your experience level using a digital camera? If you are just a beginner, you may want to look for models that are easier to use. Digital cameras with less features and options should be considered if you are a beginner. Cameras with less options and features are usually easier to use and understand. If you are more experienced, you most likely will want a camera that gives you more control. A digital camera with a large amount of options and features should be considered if you are more experienced.

Do some research online to compare several different digital camera models. Many sites offer digital camera searches by features, and some even offer side by side comparisons. Using this information, choose two-three digital cameras, that offer the options and features that you want, along with the price you can afford. Knowing this information will help you to not be pressured by salesman and make a purchase you may later regret. Visit stores with working digital camera models, so you can handle the camera and play with the features and see how it feels to take pictures. The camera most likely won't have a memory card inside to allow you to take a picture but pretend that you are taking pictures anyway; see if the camera fits comfortably in your hands.

When you do find a digital camera that you want to purchase, decide if you want to purchase an optional warranty on the camera. Look carefully at the factory warranty and determine if it is sufficient. Before going to the check out line, determine what type of batteries the camera uses. If the camera takes AAA batteries you may want to consider purchasing rechargeable batteries. Don't forget to save your receipt, the camera's box and all warranty papers. Also make sure you register your purchase with the manufacturer. This will make it easier to make a warranty claim, if needed.

And finally, have fun using the digital camera that is just right for you.
