Digital video compared to film

Film_Roll_C.jpg
Even now, well into the computer age, nearly the entire motion picture is based on production using film.Although many professional photographers have made the switch from film to digital, people shooting videos have been slower to make this switch. There are several reasons for this hesitancy.

To understand the advantages and disadvantages of using digital video or using film, it is important to understand how each medium works.

How film works

Film works via chemical reactions on negatives. The film is exposed to a scene in the world through a little whole in the camera.Chemical on the film react to the different waves of light (which equal different colors) make a permanent change to the film. This change is the "negative" image, which is permanently burned into the film. The negative is the translated to a positive and that is what we view.

How digital works

When making a digital recordings the camera works without the use of film.Instead, when the light enters through the tiny hole in the camera, the image is recorded digitally as a series of 1s and 0s.Computers read the 1s and 0s and outputs a perfect replication of what was recorded in the camera.Everything you see on a computer is represented by binary code, which makes digital images extremely versatile.Think about all the things a Photoshop program can do.These things are possible through the binary code and the same options are available to you for video editing when you make a digital video.

What are the advantages of film?

The main advantage of film is the 100 years that film has been around. The multi billion dollar movie industry has put a lot of research and development into the use of film.Everything in the industry is set up for the use of film, including lighting sets and standard projectors.

Another advantage to film is that we are used to seeing it.The "look" of film is slightly different from the "look" of video. This is partially because of the process of translating the image, to a negative, and back to a positive image again. It is also partially because of the different way that film and digital video handle light.

What are the advantages of digital?

A big advantage in using digital is in the editing options.Often video shot with digital is shot from several angles and the files can be blended together. There is much more flexibility with digital files than there is with film because the image is static with film and dynamic with video. This means that you can make editing changes to video that wouldn't be possible using film.

The use of video is also easy in the computer age.As long as the camera comes with a FireWire, it can be plugged into any computer. That means instead of hassling with tapes and video players, you can just plug the camera in and watch your video.Once the files are on a computer, you can save and make copies just as easily as you can with music files or photo files.

Which is better, digital or film?

Which is the right option for you depends on your goals and your computer abilities. If you are going to make movies that you would like to produce, you might want to stick to film, as it is the industry norm.In addition, if you don't like dealing with computer files, or if you don't have a computer, the digital option makes no sense.

However, if you love your digital still camera, chances are pretty good that you will love a digital video camera as well.
