Finding a good podcasting server

In order to make your podcast available for numerous listeners you are going to have to upload it to some kind of web server. This is where podcasting can get expensive because of bandwidth transfers rates, which is why it is better to keep your podcasts small because less data will be transferred and keep in mind that the more popular your podcast is the more bandwidth you will use.

Here are some tips on three different kinds of podcasting servers.

Tip one:
If you already own a web server then you don't have anything to worry about when it comes to finding a web server to upload your podcast too. But before you use your web server you should check into what your bandwidth costs can be so that you won't be surprised if you get a huge bill. In the beginning your bandwidth transfer won't be that high because you are just getting started, but as time goes on and your podcast becomes more popular your bill can steadily climb. Another factor that goes into determining how much your bill is going to be is the size of the file that people are downloading, the larger the file the more bandwidth that is going to be used per download. If your podcast gets too big for you to continue paying your bill month to month you should look into some other podcasting servers.

Tip two:

Rather than paying for the amount of bandwidth you use for your web server you can rent services from sites such as the1host.com for a monthly fee. You will really need to be aware of transfer limits on these types of sites because once you reach your maximum amount allowed they will most likely suspend your site until the beginning of the next month or they can charge you high additional fees. When looking at these sites it is a good idea to read the fine print to see if you can pay a different amount each month if you think you will be going over your transfer amounts, this way you don't get hit with high additional charges and so your web site doesn't get shut down. If you get your web site shut down and a user goes to see if anything new has been uploaded or if they wish to download an older podcast and can not reach your page they might unsubscribe from your podcasts and you could lose your audience.

Tip three:

While these are not the best kinds of servers you can also find free sites that will host your podcast, especially if it is not for commercial use, meaning you are not going to make money off of it. These sites might require you to uphold some type of agreement, such as advertising their site on your website or putting an ad in your blog, but that is pennies compared to how much you could end up paying for your web server. But one thing that you need to keep in mind when it comes to using free podcast hosting is to read the terms of agreement very carefully. Most of the time if you agree to let them host your podcast you are giving up your rights to your podcast and they can put in advertising before or after the show if they see fit, which means they can do it without telling you. One group that offers for podcasting hosting is Podshow.com in order to qualify for the free hosting you will need to click the bottom at the bottom of the page that asks if you are a podcaster and if you agree to the terms and conditions they have set forth. These types of podcasting servers are great if you are creating the podcasts for fun and don't want to spend a lot of money doing it.

Just remember that before choosing a podcasting server you are going to have to check it out to be sure that it is a good server for you to use.
