How do I change my Gmail password if I forgot it?

Like many other free e-mail account service providers, Gmail has provided its users with a way of retrieving lost or forgotten log in information if needed. The first thing that needs to be done is to go to the Gmail log in screen and right below the box where you would enter your username or password (depending on which of the two you have forgotten) there is an option that says "I cannot access my account," click on this option and select the problem that you are having.

Forgotten password:
When you forget your password the Gmail security system will ask you to provide your username. After entering in the correct username, Gmail will send instructions to the secondary email address you provided during signup. If you don't have a secondary email address, if you no longer have access to that account, or if you don't remember what other account you entered, you will need to wait five days. After five days you should go back to the Gmail sign in page and re-select the 'Forgot your password?' link.In order to protect the security of its users the account must remain idle for the five day waiting period in order to ensure that there are not security breaches and that the individual claiming to be the account owner is in fact legitimate.Just so that you are aware, the Gmail team cannot waive the five day requirement or access your password under any circumstances.Once the five day waiting period is passed you will be able to reset your forgotten password by answering a security question that you set up when you first opened the account. If you are for any reason unable to answer your security question correctly or to access your secondary email account, the Gmail team cannot provide further assistance and your only other option is to create an entirely new account. If you are concerned that your inability to access your account is the fault of a hacker or other intruder you should contact the Gmail security center by visiting the link to the Security Center.

Forgotten username:
Perhaps it is not your password that you have forgotten but rather your username that you are having trouble remembering. There is also a link after clicking on the "I cannot access my account," to receive help in finding what your username is.When you sign up for a Gmail account, part of the application process involved providing a secondary e-mail address in case you forget either your username or your password. If you have forgotten your username, you can select "forgot your username?" on the account help page and enter in the secondary e-mail address that you used when you initially opened your account.Your username information will them be sent to that account.

Sometimes it's not your fault:
Sometimes you can be doing everything right including entering the correct password and username and the Gmail system will not allow you access to your account. If you're seeing an "Oops" error when you try to log in, it means that Gmail is temporarily unavailable. These errors generally resolve themselves within a few minutes and you should allow the system a few minute to reload before trying to log in again. If after waiting a while, you are still denied access to your account by continuing to see this error for an extended period of time, you should notify the Gmail support team by following the "contact us" link in the help portion of the login problems pages.By selecting to contact the support team you must provide a few pieces of account information. You will also be asked if you are having a serious technical problem that makes Google Mail unusable or if the tips described in the Help Center did not solve your problem. If you wish to just contact the Gmail help center for any other reason a link to contact the Gmail help center located at the top left of your Gmail login screen.
