How do I remove myself from the search engines? How do I remove myself from the search engines?First let's talk about search engines. What search engines, like Google, Yahoo, MSN, and hundreds and hundreds of other search engines do, is they go out and they search all of the billions and billions of pages of information on the Internet. And then they collect all of that information and they index it.So then what you can do is direct a search engine to search through all of its collections and all of its indices for a particular term.It will then pull up all of the pages that have a particular name in them, for instance, and will bring up the most exact hits and matches first.
Pretty amazing, eh?So why would you want your name taken off of the search engines? There are thousands and thousands of people who are trying to get their names on the search engines.Search engines can be a fantastic publicity and public relations tool.Search engines, such as Yahoo, Google, and MSN are essential marketing tools.Entrepreneurs and companies specifically get their name out there tons and tons of times so that it will come up in searches. They also fill their personal webpages with popular terms about their particular topic so that when that term is looked for on a search engine, their website will be the first or one of the first websites to come up. So why would you want your name removed from the search engines?Well, search engines can be negative publicity also.Let's say that you were reading somebody's blog. They said something that you strongly disagreed with.Or maybe you thought that they were being just plain stupid, or offensive, or lying about something. So you post a very strongly worded comment in reply. You want to set things straight.Or maybe you were just a little bit blinded by anger and by passion. And then you make the mistake-which you should never, ever, ever make, of posting your name with your comment. This whole situation might not feel like that big of a deal at the time. But in a few weeks, there start to be rumors at work."Did you read what so-and-so posted? Can you believe that language? Can you believe what so-and-so said?"Eventually news gets up to your boss.Or maybe what happened in Vegas didn't quite stay in Vegas, for whatever reason.Maybe one of your friends or someone somewhere posted your name in conjunction with tales of certain exploits. You don't want your friends, family, current employer, or potential future employers, to know about certain, ahem, events. Or maybe you're concerned about the security of yourself or your family. You just don't want to risk people looking you up online. You don't want any personal information available to who knows whom. You don't want your name out there, because then it canbe linked to email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers, and more. You just plain want to live within the Information Revolution completely anonymously.Hey, it's completely understandable. It seems like there's no such thing as privacy any more. Can't you escape having some random person in Mongolia know about your child's GPA? It was so easy to end up in the search engines.Your kid comes up for the honor roll, for crying out loud. But what about getting out of the search engines?Let's be perfectly honest here: it's basically impossible.
