How to choose a digital video camera

Choosing a digital video camera is as important as choosing the right pair of shoes. It has to fit your personality, hobbies, weather, and for what purpose it will be mainly used for. Just like shoes, there are thousands of different kinds of digital video cameras and so it can become difficult to buy exactly what you are looking for. Before taking the plunge and buying a digital video camera, ask yourself some important questions:

  1. What do I need a digital video camera for?
  2. How often am I going to use it?
  3. How much money am I willing to spend for one?
  4. What do I need and want it do?
  5. What can I live without?
  6. What does is absolutely have to do for me?

If these questions are constantly running through your mind while shopping for a digital video camera, you most likely will not fall into a trap of buying the wrong thing.

There are many online vendors that make competition for your business that you may want to take advantage of when you have made a decision on what digital video camera fits your needs, but they can never compete with local businesses that you can go into and actually hold and touch the digital video camera in mind. Online vendors also can't service the camera if it ever has problems in the future. Local camera retailers usually have servicemen on staff and provide warranties that cover costs for future problems. Be sure and ask about it.

Digital video cameras come in all shapes and sizes, so don't judge a camera's quality solely on the way it looks. There are advertizing techniques that are aimed at luring consumers to products and overlook their weaknesses. Being pretty and shiny is how they get you to buy their digital video cameras over someone else. There are some things that have to be taken into consideration, no matter what camera you buy.

  1. What media does the digital video camera use? There's MiniDV tapes, Mini DVD discs, Hard-disk memory, etc. Each of these medias has inherent quality issues that need to be explored. Weigh ease of use over quality, choose what's most important to you.
  2. What kind of lense does the camera use? What brand of lense is it? How far does the optical zoom go? Can the lense be extended with an attachment? The lense is extremely important because that is the first step your precious moment passes through, so it needs to be captured with a lense that will help the video look good. Glass lenses usually perform better over plastic based lenses, so try them out and compare the results.
  3. How long does the battery last? Can I buy a bigger battery for it? How many charges can the battery take before I have to buy a new one? Does the battery come with it's one charger or does the camera itself act as the cradle for charging? These are important questions to ask because there is nothing more frustrating than the camera going dead right when little Cydney is in the middle of her first ballet recital. You can buy a new battery, but you can't buy a new memory.

If you take the time to really understand why these things are important and then test these things on the digital video cameras you are looking at, you will be sure to find a good solid camera. If you can narrow yourself down to about 5 cameras, then look at some of the cool extra stuff they can do. For example, my little digital video camera does wide screen mode and has microphone zoom. A lot of cameras do some neat things that will make shooting more fun for you in the future. Weigh those with the fundamental parts of the digital video camera and make the decision. Now you can be confident that you have found the perfect digital video camera.
