Being trained on how to make digital videos is a matter of steps. You could jump right into film making school but most people progress through trial and error with the instruction manual and then train to the level of the videos they want to produce.

When you first get the camera, you should do a little self-training.Try out the different features.Open the video on the software that the camera comes with. This is a great place way to get familiar with your equipment. You can learn by yourself how to take footage and how to handle the files.Once you have the basics down you can move on to more intense training.

The next step for your training might be provided by the maker of the camera.Several different cameras come with training classes. These are typically offered once a week, often where you bought the camera. These classes will teach you the basics of how the equipment works. They will basically walk you through the instruction manual. After completing the series of classes your will by able to make and edit your own videos.

However, you might want to take your instruction further. You might want to learn more about a specific skill like making animated video. You also might want to learn how to compose better videos in an artistic sense or how to add professional looking graphics to your finished product.

If you want to take this next step and learn more about how to shoot and edit digital video, you should probably either read a book about digital filmmaking or watch a DVD.

There are books available for every level of instruction and on every topic. The popular "for dummies" series makes a Digital Video for Dummies book that teaches the basics.Look through the books available on a book-selling website like Amazon or Barns and Noble; you will see hundreds of titles. Some books are specific to things like sound, lighting, or compression of files.Other books are much more general, like the Digital Video Pocket Guide or the Digital Video Handbook. It is a good idea to look at a general book and let your interests and needs develop; soon you will know what specific questions are interesting to you.

Using DVDs instead of books at this step is another option. You will be able to find about the same topic selection for DVDs as you can for books.Whether you learn from books or from videos is really a personal choice that is determined by you learning style.I personally like to learn from books.

Of course, answers to specific questions can often be found online.Typing the keywords into a search engine is likely to turn up answers to your questions or leads on where to find answers.

If you are having a hard time teaching yourself through learning or books, or if you want to get serious about film making, you can take a class.Classes at all levels are available through colleges and universities. You can take them for credit or take them as life-long learning or continuing educations classes depending on your goals.Check at your local college or college extension to find out about classes in your area.

Finally, the best way to learn to make awesome videos is through practice. You will develop an "eye" for good video. With practice, you will also become adept at using the computer and your editing time will drop off drastically. Show your videos often and ask for feedback. Then incorporate the feedback into making each video a little better than the one before it.
