How to import and export podcasts

Importing podcasts is a process that allows you to take podcasts from another location at transfer it to a different location. For example if you have podcasts saved to a CD you can import the podcast from the CD onto your hard drive or if you have podcasts saved to your computer and you want to transfer them to your iPod or other portable media device. Whatever it is you are wishing to do the process is called importing.

Regardless of what you want to do here are some basic steps to importing podcasts.

Step one:
If you want to import podcasts to your computer then you are going to have to use some type of podcatching software, such as iTunes or iPodder.

Step two:
Once you have the software installed you can then import podcasts to your computer to listen to on your computer or to transfer the podcast to a portable media device. If you are going to import the podcast to a mP3 player or something similar you will need to follow the directions for importing that came with the MP3 player. If you are importing your podcast to an IPod and you currently use iTunes the great news is that iTunes does everything for you automatically. So let's proceed with the steps to import a podcast to your computer with podcatching software.

Step three:
After you have installed the podcasting software all you have to do is subscribe to the RSS feed and the software will automatically import the newest podcasts to your computer. That is the great thing about podcatching software, it does everything for you. Also if you are still unsure you can always find tutorials on how to use the software on the various websites.

Step four:
If you are trying to import podcasts from a CD onto your computer the first thing you are going to have to do is having some type of software, it usually comes with your CD burner or writer, that will allow you to import the CD onto your computer. All you have to do is place the CD in the drive and click on import CD.

Now that we understand importing we need to take a look at exporting. Exporting podcasts is taking the podcasts we have created and putting them onto a web server for other people to enjoy. So before you can even begin to export your podcast you must make sure that is saved in MP3 format.

Step one:
To export your podcasts you are going to need to have some sound recording software, such as Audacity with the LAME plug in to export your files.

Step two:
Now you are going to want to check your export settings in the Preferences section. It will be found under file format.

Step three:
Now you are going to want to adjust your bit rate to make your file smaller but without losing to much quality. Here are some ideas for adjusting bit rates:

  • 48 - 56k Mono - this is for talking audio files such as talk shows, audio books, etc

  • 64k+ Stereo - this is perfect for music and music and talking audio files

  • 128K Stereo - this will give you the best quality music


Step four:

Now you have to set your ID3 tags. These tags provide information about your podcast. You should fill in information for the title, artist, year, genre, and comments. You can also add information in the section titled album this helps if you are going to do a series for one title.

Step five:
Now that you have completed the above steps you are ready to export your file. All you do is select File - Export as MP3 and your files should be exported to your web server.
