How to quickly learn the ins and outs of your new technology

With all the new technology that emerges almost daily the biggest obstacle facing many users is how to learn about it all. While you may be excited to purchase and use new technology that will improve your work or home life you may feel less motivated once you see all that needs to be learned about using it. The how to's of new technology can sometimes seem so daunting and overwhelming you may be tempted to give up before your really learn all you can about it. Yet before you allow your new technology to dim the excitement you have about using it consider these suggestions on how to quickly learn the ins and outs of your new technology.

 Do your research and planning before you make your purchase. Many users of new technology admit that they were swayed by glossy ads and high pressure salesman to make a technology purchase they did not really need. Before you consider making a purchase of new technology be sure that whatever it is will be beneficial to whatever you are trying to accomplish whether it is business or personal. Do not be afraid to ask questions before your purchase about the ease of use for the new technology. Knowing ahead of time what you are getting into will allow you to learn the new technology easier and faster.

 Take time to do the tutorial. This is perhaps the number one way to quickly learn the ins and outs of new technology. Companies spend a great deal of time and money to develop a user friendly tutorial that will guide you through using whatever you have just purchased. While you may be impatient to just begin using your new technology doing the tutorial(even a couple of times) can really improve your knowledge of your new technology thereby making it much easier to use.
 Read any accompanying literature. Many people assume that the literature that arrives with your new computer program or digital camera is inconsequential. This is simply not true. Most companies spend a great deal of time and research to attach helpful literature to their product. By taking a few minutes to read any accompanying literature with your new technology you can quickly improve your knowledge and skill in using your new acquisition.
 Consider taking a class. Many new technologies can be quickly learned by taking a class about the uses that are available. Don't worry most of these classes can be as short-term as you want them to be. Sometimes a couple hours in a classroom can give you the insight to have quickly learned everything you need to know about your new technology. Later on down the road you can decide if further education about your new technology is needed or wanted.
 Consider hiring a training consultant. If your new technology is business related and will involve several people having to learn a new system or process consider hiring a training consultant. This person should be able to have your staff trained and using the new technology in a short amount of time. This prevents needless "mucking around" as users are left to find the ins and out of the new technology on their own which often decreases productivity which is the direct opposite result that the new technology was put in place for.
While each of these suggestions can give you the knowledge you need to successfully and efficiently use your new technology do not overlook the value of everyday use. While you can gain a good working knowledge before using a new technology often the everyday repetitive use of your new computer program, digital camera or other new technology is needed to fully understand all the ins and outs.
